Gräfinau-Angstedt is a place in the Ilm district in Thuringia . It is a district of the city of Ilmenau . In the local dialect the place is called Granowwe .

geography

Gräfinau-Angstedt is located in the Ilm Valley approx. 6 km east of the core town of Ilmenau . The valley here is about 1500 meters wide and extends in a north-south direction. The place is about 400 meters above sea level . To the west rises the 527 meter high Wolfsberg, which gives the former community Wolfsberg its name . To the east are the 487 meter high Hopfberg and the 498 meter high Brandberg, which belong to the Paulinzella monastery forest .

Gräfinau is a row village , while Angstedt is a cluster village . The two village centers are only 200 meters away from each other and are only separated by the Ilm, but have grown together to such an extent that one can no longer see that Gräfinau-Angstedt emerged from two settlements.

2 km north of the village is Lehmannsbrück , a farm that was formerly used as a retirement home. It consists of several residential buildings, all of which are used privately today.

The Annawerk , a relay factory that has been closed since 1990, is 1.5 km south of Gräfinau-Angstedt . It stands near the confluence of the Wohlrose and the Ilm. A Mühlkanal- like branch of the Wohlrose once fed the plant with water energy. Today (April 2013) it is dry.

history

The two places Gräfinau and Angstedt were first mentioned in 1282, just like the other places of the former Wolfsberg community. The name Gräfinau comes from the name graeflich Ouwe (gräfliche Aue). The counts in question were probably the Käfernburger who ruled over this area in the 13th century. The name Angstedt is derived from the surname Ank . The first church was built in Angstedt in the 13th century. The current church construction dates from the years 1827 to 1831. The Gräfinau citizens also owned a church-like building, which later had other functions. It was used, for example, as a school and club house.

Gräfinau-Angstedt was created in 1924 from the union of the village of Gräfinau west of the Ilm, which belongs to the Schwarzburg-Rudolstädter Amt Stadtilm, and the village of Angstedt, which belongs to the Schwarzburg-Sondershäuser Amt Gehren, east of the Ilm. Until the dissolution of the state of Thuringia on July 25, 1952, Gräfinau-Angstedt belonged to the Arnstadt district . Then the place was assigned to the Ilmenau district in the Suhl district . In 1994 the districts of Ilmenau and Arnstadt were merged to form the Ilm district to which the town belongs. On April 6, 1994, Gräfinau-Angstedt merged with Bücheloh and Wümbach to form the new community of Wolfsberg. This was incorporated into the city of Ilmenau on July 6, 2018 with other communities.

Most of the inhabitants of Gräfinau-Angstedt belong to the Evangelical Lutheran Church.

The Dietrichswinde desert was located in the municipality .

coat of arms

Blazon : "From blue to red divided with a silver wave bar, floating above the bust of a golden angel, floating below a golden cancer."

The crab, which can be identified in a seal as early as 1685, stands for the district of Gräfinau and symbolizes the formerly intensive fishing in the Ilm. The angel as a speaking element stands for the district of Angstedt. The river Ilm, which separates the two districts, is heraldically implemented in the coat of arms by the wave beam.

The coat of arms was designed by heraldist Frank Diemar and approved on May 25, 1993.

Culture and sights

  • Gräfinau-Angstedt has an active club life. Practically every resident belongs to one of the 20 local associations. The hiking club, the Gräfinauer Kirmesverein and the Karnevalsverein (GCV) are particularly well-known for their activities.
  • The Church of St. Maria was built in 1830 by an unknown builder. It is the successor to the church from 1231, which was consecrated to Mary, Nicolai and All Saints , and stands on a hill. In the same year the organ was created in the workshop of Johann Friedrich Schulze . The classicist construction and interior design, which is atypical for rural areas, is assigned to the Schinkel School. The large bronze bell dates from 1512, the two smaller ones are more recent. In the mid-1990s, the tower cracked due to traffic and the building was extensively restored. The church shows clear similarities to the St. Helena Church in Siebleben , built in 1827 . Perhaps the two churches had the same architect.
  • The Heimatstube, which offers a brief glimpse into the history of Gräfinau-Angstedt.

Former full-time mayor of the municipality of Gräfinau-Angstedt was Werner Ruhlig from 1969 to 1990, and Georg Juchheim from 1990 to 1994. After the incorporation to Ilmenau in 2018, a joint local district mayor was temporarily responsible for the 3 places of the former community of Wolfsberg until May 2019.
