history

Apalachicola Town Hall

The first evidence of the settlement of the area by Indians dates back to the year 2000 BC. BC back. The name of the city comes from the indigenous culture and is translated as "land of friendly people". The area was discovered by Europeans around 1500. At the mouth of the Apalachicola River, a fort was built by the Spanish in 1705 , which was ceded to England in 1763 . In 1783 the area came back to Spain through the Peace of Paris . Due to unrest in the colonies of South America, however, the Spanish were no longer able to effectively control their Florida colony . From 1818 the United States began to claim the area for itself and waged the First Seminole War against the remaining natives . The Florida Territory was proclaimed in 1821 and the State of Florida in 1845.

The place Apalachicola was called Cottonton before 1821 and then renamed the Town of West Point . In 1831 the name was finally changed to Apalachicola.

From 1907, the Apalachicola Northern Railroad provided a rail link between Apalachicola and what would later become Chattahoochee , where there was a connection to the important main line from Pensacola to Jacksonville (then operated by the Louisville and Nashville Railroad ). In 1910 an extension of the branch from Apalachicola to Port St. Joe was opened. Today the line from Chattahoochee is operated by AN Railway .
