The Aquia district is located in the Bolognesi province in the Ancash region in western Peru . The district was founded on January 2, 1857. It has an area of ​​437 km². The 2017 census counted 2204 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 3431, in 2007 2860. The district administration is located in the 3337  m high village of Aquia with 628 inhabitants (as of 2017). Aquia is located almost 9 km northeast of the provincial capital Chiquián .

Geographical location

The Aquia district is located on the western flank of the Peruvian Western Cordillera in the extreme northwest of the Bolognesi province. The eastern district boundary runs along the continental divide . The district includes the headwaters of the Río Pativilca , which drains the area to the south.

The Aquia district borders on the Cátac district ( Recuay province ) to the west, the Chavín de Huántar and San Marcos districts (both in the Huari province ) to the north, the Huallanca district to the east, the Huasta district to the southeast and the southwest to the district of Chiquián .
