Place in Rutigliano |
Rutigliano (in ancient times Acetium , Greek Ἀζητῖνοι Azetinoi ) is a southern Italian community ( comune ) in Apulia .
geography
The municipality in the metropolitan city of Bari has 18,584 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).
The place is about 20 kilometers southeast of Bari in the limestone plateau Murgia .
history
The area was settled by the Peuketeers in pre-Roman times . The area was fertile due to its clay minerals and the high proportion of lime. It is not clear whether the name of the place comes from the ancient Roman family name Rutilia or whether the red clay gave it its name. In August 1024 the place is mentioned in the documents of Pope Nicholas II . Later the city falls under Norman rule. The Torre Normanna ( Norman Tower ) still testifies to this today .
traffic
The Strada Statale 634 used to run through the town. It has now been downgraded to a provincial road (strada provinciale 240).
Rutigliano has a train station on the Bari – Martina Franca – Taranto line .
