The Bakerloo Line is a metro -line of the London Underground . It is shown in brown on the route network map. It is a tube railway and crosses the city center from south-east to north-west. Of the 25 stations, 15 are underground.

Originally known as the Baker Street and Waterloo Railway , the line was completed by the Underground Electric Railways Company of London owned by US financier Charles Tyson Yerkes and opened on March 10, 1906. The line was initiated by the mine owner Whitaker Wright , who had gone bankrupt and committed suicide shortly after his conviction in 1904 before the Royal Courts of Justice . The suitcase word Bakerloo , used since 1906, was soon much more common, whereupon the official name was changed accordingly.

By 1913, the line was extended from its western terminus Baker Street to Marylebone and Paddington stations . In 1915 the Bakerloo Line reached Queen's Park station . From there it drove in parallel with local trains on the Watford DC Line of the London and North Western Railway electrified with busbars to Watford Junction . Through trains to Watford were restricted in the 1960s. In 1982 the line was limited to the Greater London area and Stonebridge Park was the new terminus. Since 1984 the trains run back to Harrow & Wealdstone .

In the mid-1930s, the Metropolitan Line had to contend with capacity constraints on the section between Baker Street and Finchley Road . To relieve this section, a new, parallel tunnel was built between these stations as part of the New Works Program . The Metropolitan Line took over the role of an express line, while the Bakerloo Line took over the local traffic and the route branch to Stanmore on November 20, 1939 . Three stations on the Metropolitan Line ( Lord’s , Marlborough Road , Swiss Cottage ) have been replaced by two new ones on the Bakerloo Line ( St. John's Wood , Swiss Cottage ). The Stanmore branch remained part of the Bakerloo Line until May 1, 1979, when it was transferred to the newly opened Jubilee Line .

Since 1931 there have been plans to extend the line south from Elephant & Castle to Camberwell and Denmark Hill. However, this extension has never been built due to lack of money. Transport for London has been responsible for the Watford DC Line since 2006 and has trains running on it from London Overground . The intention is to discontinue suburban rail traffic and instead let the Bakerloo Line run to Watford (as before 1982). An extension of the line to Beckenham Junction is planned.

The first vehicles, the gate stock trains with open platforms, were built in the USA at ACF's Berwick in Pennsylvania . Entry and exit were always at the end of the car. A high grille closed the platform.

In 1938 the 1938 Tube Stock was put into service, as 7-part trains they gradually replaced the Standard Tube Stock . In 1985 the last original Bakerloo Line trains were shut down. In 1973 the 1972 Tube Stock was put into service and is still in use today.

It is controversial whether this branch line is to be counted to the Bakerloo Line, as it was operated by the LNWR, but was electrified (in contrast to the LNWR main line).
