Bastille ( spelling BΔSTILLE ) is a four-piece British indie rock band from south London .
Band history
Bastille was originally a solo project of the singer-songwriter Dan Smith , which he expanded into a band with three friends in 2010. The band is named after July 14th, as lead singer Dan Smith's birthday is on that day. The day is celebrated in France as a national holiday in memory of the storming of the Bastille . The band initially published their music in the form of mixtapes on the Internet, with film fan Smith also editing film scenes for the videos, regardless of copyright. The attention they gained helped them to perform at festivals like the one in Glastonbury and eventually to a recording deal with an indie label. They then toured the UK, the United States and South Africa .
The vinyl debut single with the songs Flaws and Icarus was released in July 2011. This was followed by the Laura Palmer EP as an homage to the character of the same name from the TV series Twin Peaks . The song Overjoyed included on it became their first release in 2012 after being signed by EMI / Virgin . With the re-release of Flaws as a regular single and download, they reached number 21 in the UK charts in autumn 2012 . In February 2013, Bastille released their fourth single Pompeii , which was a huge hit. It landed at number 2 in the UK charts and also placed at number 6 in the German charts .
Her debut album Bad Blood reached number 1 in the UK charts a week after its release . The second album Wild World was released in September 2016 .
