Bedtime Stories is Madonna's sixth studio album . It was released in October 1994.
background
Bedtime Stories was published two years after Madonna's excesses with her book SEX , and her critically-panned album Erotica , which was partly strongly sexual and musically based mainly on hip-hop beats . Well-known producers such as Dallas Austin , Nellee Hooper , Dave Jam Hall and Babyface were hired, who had previously produced hits for artists such as TLC , Whitney Houston , Soul II Soul and Toni Braxton . For the first time since Like a Virgin (1984) , Madonna was supported by established producers with a studio album.
This resulted in the strong soul influence that Madonna gained a foothold again, especially on US radio. The lyrics of the songs are about love and religion, but also deal openly self-critically with the controversies of the previous years.
Secret , Human Nature and especially the ballad Take a Bow developed into passable successes that made the failures of the last two years forget. The videos shot for this presented an erotic Madonna in white trash style ( Secret ), who, especially in the SM parody Human Nature , pokes herself (“Did I say something wrong? Oops, I didn't know I couldn't talk about sex "). The video for Take a Bow (with the Spanish bullfighter Emilio Muñoz) shows Madonna as grande dame, an allusion to her later role as Evita (1996). A year later, a successful sequel to the video was filmed with You'll See , which follows on from its plot. Take a Bow , which ran only with moderate success in Europe, became the best-selling single of the year in the USA.
The album could not follow Madonna's great success, but with six million units sold, it was considered a veritable success. In addition, it largely determined the direction of the next albums, which should present Madonna more gently and finally establish herself as a successful ballad singer.
