Beljow ( Russian Белёв ) is a city in Tula Oblast , Russia , on the left bank of the Oka River . The city has 13,918 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
history
Like many other cities on the Oka, Belyov was mentioned for the first time in a chronicle in 1147. After the Chernigov principality disappeared after the Mongol invasion of Russia , Belyov became the seat of the local princely dynasty. The princes of Belyov vacillated between the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Grand Duchy of Moscow until they moved to the latter. The city has one of the oldest churches in Tula Oblast.
