Population development

The district of Sankt Veit an der Glan has 54,186 inhabitants January 1, 2020. The population density is lower than the national average, the main settlement areas are the Metnitz , Glan and Gurktal valleys . The work center is the district capital St. Veit. St. Veit and the communities of Althofen and Friesach are well connected to Klagenfurt in the south and the Murtal in the north via the main traffic axis Südbahn / Klagenfurt expressway S37 . Over 60% of all jobs in the district are in these three locations. The upper Gurktal, the Metnitz - and the Görtschitztal , however, are very peripheral.
The negative population development of the last few decades is due to the negative balance of migration , the birth balance was positive until 2001. From 1991 to 2001 there were 734 more births than deaths. The trends changed between 2013 and 2017: the birth balance turned negative (−721), the migration balance slightly positive (+60).
Income, unemployment
The average income in the Sankt Veit district is just below the average for Carinthia, but well below that of Austria. In contrast, the unemployment rate is below that of Carinthia and, since 2015, just below that of Austria. It is striking that youth unemployment is very high. In contrast, the number of long-term unemployed is far below the average for Carinthia and Austria.
