Breweries in Michigan

Breweries in Michigan produce a wide range of beers that are marketed locally, regionally, nationally or internationally. In 2014 Michigan had nearly 160 brewing companies (including breweries, microbrewery pubs, importers, bottling plants and wholesalers). In 2017 the list of members of the Brewery Guild had almost 240 members.

Because of its booming craft beer scene, Grand Rapids was voted Beer City USA in 2012 and 2013.

Economical meaning

In 2016, the beer industry contributed $ 10.5 billion to Michigan's economy. There are almost 35,000 jobs in Michigan in wholesale, retail and beer production. Around 14,000 more people work for suppliers.

In 2014, 159 breweries in Michigan produced 825,103 barrels of beer, 40 percent more than in 2013. This puts Michigan in 10th place in the USA in terms of the amount of beer produced and in 6th place in terms of the number of craft breweries.

The bulk of this was sold by Michigan's two largest breweries by far: Bell's Brewery (318,926 barrels) and Founders (193,000 barrels). These two are the only breweries in the US top 50 largest breweries in the country (Bell's # 14 and Founders # 16).

5,100 people are employed at craft beer producers, wholesalers and retailers, and a further 757 people, for example at suppliers of raw materials, glasses and production machines. Craft breweries had sales of $ 277 million in 2014.

The Michigan Brewers Guild is responsible for marketing and coordinating Michigan beers.

The number of craft breweries has risen sharply in recent years. A few larger craft breweries were founded in the 1980s (including Bell's), and even more so in the 1990s: 1992 Traffic Jam & Snug; 1994 Motor City Brewing Works; 1995 Arbor Brewing, Grizzly Peak, Great Baraboo Brewing, North Peak Brewing, and Royal Oak Brewery; 1996 Arcadia Ales and Olde Peninsula Brewpub & Restaurant; 1997 Atwater, CJ's Brewing, Founders and New Holland Brewing and 1998 Dark Horse Brewing, Kuhnhenn Brewing and Rochester Mills Beer. Michigan's oldest still operating brewery is Frankenmuth Brewery from 1862. Between 2010 and 2015 alone, the number of craft breweries doubled.

Various breweries have settled in the university town of Ann Arbor . The Arbor Brewing Company (ABC) started operations back in 1995; today it includes locations in the neighboring town of Ypsilanti and in Bangalore (India). The Jolly Pumpkin Brewery, which is based on a brewery and pizzeria concept, is expanding and now has branches in Detroit, Dexter, Royal Oak and Traverse City.
