Bry-sur-Marne is a French commune in the Paris area , about 12 km east of the center of the metropolis. It belongs to the canton of Villiers-sur-Marne . The next higher administrative districts are the Arrondissement Nogent-sur-Marne , the Département Val-de-Marne and the Region Île-de-France . Bry-sur-Marne belongs to the Ville nouvelle Marne-la-Vallée . The residents are called Bryards or Bryardes .
etymology
The name part Bry is derived from the Celtic word Briw "bridge, ford". The word Marne describes the river on which the city lies.
geography
Bry-sur-Marne is in the center of the Paris basin . The river Marne borders the city to the west. Neighboring communities are Le Perreux-sur-Marne in the west, Neuilly-sur-Marne in the north, Noisy-le-Grand in the north - east, Villiers-sur-Marne in the south-east and Champigny-sur-Marne in the south.
history
The present urban area has been settled since the Neolithic. In 1903 the archaeologist and former mayor Adrien Mentienne placed an ox bone 15,000 years ago. In 1982 Henri Cahn found the skeleton of a young woman from the 5th century BC on the town's school grounds. It is now in the local museum Musée Adrien Mentienne . In 1886, a number of valuable objects from the Roman and Merovingian times , such as ceramics, weapons, coins and jewelery from a necropolis were unearthed during excavations .
The city is first mentioned with its current name on a certificate from Charles the Bald from 861. The king authorized his brother-in-law, Count Bégon, to donate part of his land, " Brit, sis dans le pays de Parisis ", to the monks of Saint-Maur . The first church was built in 1120 or 1130, but was not consecrated until 1254 by Jean de Brie, the landlord, Saints Gervasius and Protasius . Since then, all of Bry's lords have been buried in the nave or choir of the parish church of St Gervais-St Protais. Destroyed by fire, it was rebuilt in 1610 and expanded in the 18th century.
At the beginning of feudal rule, Bry's holdings were divided between clerical and secular rulers. Tradition has it that they included Foulque de Bry in the 12th century, Sicard de Bry in the 13th century, the Pacy family in the 14th century and the Bernadin family in the 15th century. In 1404 Robert Chatillon, cousin of Charles VI. , Ruler of Bry. His castle was probably behind the church, where the Favier Foundation now operates a nursing home. In the 15th century the land went to Jean de Malestroit. The Hôtel de Malestroit, whose foundation walls date from the 17th / 18th centuries, stands on the site of his manor house. Century. In the 17th century the land belonged to the Miron family. Its most famous representative was François Miron, under Henry IV provost of Paris and advisor to the king. At the end of the 17th century, Nicolas de Frémont, Marquis d'Auneuil, bought the country house Bry and had a new castle built on it, today's Château de Bry. Étienne de Silhouette , Minister of Finance under Louis XV. , was one of the subsequent owners. After his death in 1767, his nephew and heir Clement de Laage became lord of Bry. His execution in the course of the Great Terror of the French Revolution ended the line of noble rulers of Bry.
As a result of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, Bry, and so was the castle, was badly affected. The subsequent restoration of the palace involved considerable alterations compared to the original construction plans.
Fundamental changes took place in the city at the beginning of the 20th century. New residential quarters were created on the grounds of the castle park and the tree nurseries. In 1926 Bry was connected to the rail network and in 1970 to the motorway network. Construction of the Saint-Camille Hospital began in 1936, but its completion was delayed by the Second World War , so that it could only be operated by the Camillian Order , a Catholic order of nursing , from 1952 . Industrial and trading companies settled in the city. This is how economic development progressed.
In 1973 the Adrien Mentienne Museum was opened. Its namesake was mayor of the city from 1868 to 1881.

The residents' pride in their long history is expressed in the inscription on the city's coat of arms: “ Moult viel gue Paris ” (“Much older than Paris”). The design comes from Mr Dandois, a heraldist from Vincennes . The shield is divided into four parts:
- Above left, on a blue background, the golden impeller of a medieval water mill
- Above right, on a green background, three silver ears of corn symbolize fertile soil
- Below left, the old wooden bridge that the Gauls crossed in the second century
- Below right, on a red background, also made of gold, an old elm that was planted in the 15th century and felled in 1904

In the next few years, the population of Bry-sur-Marne will continue to rise sharply, as the municipality is part of the Porte de Paris (Marne-la-Vallée) development in the 1st sector of the Ville nouvelle Marne-la-Vallée .

Bry-sur-Marne has been connected to the RER (Line A) network of the Paris regional train network since 1977 with Gare de Bry-sur-Marne station . Furthermore, the Paris bus routes 120, 210, 220 and 520 run by the state bus company RATP . The city can be reached via the A4 and A86 motorways.

The Institut national de l'audiovisuel is a public company and has its headquarters in Bry-sur-Marne. All radio and television broadcasts in France are archived here in digitized form.

- Étienne de Silhouette (1709–1767) was French general controller of finances.
- The artist Louis Daguerre lived in Bry-sur-Marne from 1839 until his death in 1851. A stele was erected for him on the traffic island of Place Daguerre on the banks of the Marne . Also a street not far away and the festival hall next to the town hall bear his name.
- The Catholic clergyman and archaeologist Jean Ferron (1910-2003) died in Bry-sur-Marne
