Wunnenstein Castle

The castle Wunnenstein is an Outbound hilltop castle on the 394 m high Wunnenstein , the eastern part of the summit plateau northeast of winemakers Hausen, a modern suburb of Großbottwar in the district of Ludwigsburg in Baden-Württemberg .

Presumably the castle was built in the 13th century by the Lords of Wunnenstein, who were probably ancestral relatives of the Ilsfeld local nobility.

A lower nobility family , first mentioned in 1251, named itself after the mountain Wunnenstein , whose most important representative was the Wolf von Wunnenstein, who lived in the 2nd half of the 14th century, known as the "glistening wolf", he became known for his participation in numerous feuds , in which he sometimes fought against Count Eberhard II of Württemberg, sometimes supported, etc. a. in the battle of Döffingen . The sex branched out into several lines and died out around 1450 in the male line. The castle built by him on the Wunnenstein, 1317 z. Partly assigned to the bishops of Würzburg as a fief , was destroyed in 1413. The Burgstall came to Württemberg around 1449 via those of Urbach and Sachsenheim .

Remnants of the wall of the former castle are still preserved and the neck moat is visible.
