Catherine Naglestad

Catherine Naglestad (* 1965 in San Jose ) is an American opera and concert singer with a soprano voice .

Life

Youth and education

Naglestad was born to Scandinavian parents in California and grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area . She received her Bachelor of Music from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and advanced her studies in Rome , Milan and New York City .

Career

In her early career, Catherine Naglestad initially had roles such as Konstanze in Die Entführung aus dem Serail and Fiordiligi in Così fan tutte by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart , Alcina in the opera of the same name by Georg Friedrich Handel and Alceste in the opera of the same name by Christoph Willibald Gluck interprets. In later years she worked on the dramatic roles of Giuseppe Verdi , Giacomo Puccini and Richard Strauss , as well as the works of Richard Wagner , including Brünnhilde in Siegfried at the Bavarian State Opera under Kent Nagano , Elsa in Lohengrin at the Teatro Real Madrid , and Senta in The Flying Dutchman and Sieglinde in Die Walküre at De Nederlandse Opera , both conducted by Hartmut Haenchen .

Naglestad has sung leading roles in opera houses and concert halls around the world, including - in addition to those already mentioned - in Germany at the State Opera Unter den Linden and the Deutsche Oper in Berlin and the opera houses in Düsseldorf , Frankfurt , Hamburg and Stuttgart , in Austria at the Vienna State Opera , in Switzerland at the Zurich Opera House , in France at the Opéra National de Paris , the Opéra Bastille and Opéra Garnier in Paris and the opera houses in Lyon and Marseille , in the United Kingdom at the Royal Opera House in London and the Opera House in Edinburgh , in Japan at Suntory Hall and at the New National Theater in Tokyo and in the United States at the San Francisco Opera , the Dallas Opera and the Metropolitan Opera in New York City . She has also participated in many opera festivals, including the festivals in Salzburg , Baden-Baden , Bregenz , Edinburgh, the Ruhrtriennale , the Budapest Spring Festival and the Hong Kong Arts Festival .

Naglestad was closely associated with the Stuttgart State Theater , where she was engaged from 1997 to 2003. Here she gave the roles of Vitellia in La clemenza di Tito , Nedda in Pagliacci , Elisabetta in Don Carlos , Leonore in Il trovatore , Norma in the opera of the same name by Vincenzo Bellini and Handel's Alcina.

In the 2013/2014 opera season, Catherine Naglestad made her debut as Minnie in Giacomo Puccini's La fanciulla del West at the Zurich Opera, conducted by Marco Armiliato . She has appeared at De Nederlandse Opera and the Bavarian State Opera as Brünnhilde in Richard Wagner's Siegfried . She also gave Leonora in La forza del destino by Giuseppe Verdi at the Grand Théâtre de la Ville de Luxembourg , Sieglinde in Wagner's Die Walküre to De Nederlandse Opera and Elsa von Brabant in Wagner's Lohengrin .

The 2014/2015 opera season took Naglestad to the Vienna State Opera (as Salome in the opera of the same name by Richard Strauss under Simone Young ), a role she has already given at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples under the direction of Nicola Luisotti . Further stations were the State Theater Stuttgart (as Cio-Cio San in Puccini's Madama Butterfly ), the Bavarian State Opera (as Brünnhilde in Wagner's Siegfried ) and the Hamburg State Opera (as Cassandre in Les Troyens by Hector Berlioz ).

In the 2015/2016 opera season, Naglestad was Cio-Cio-San at the Stuttgart State Theater, Salome at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Senta in Richard Wagner's The Flying Dutchman at the Bavarian State Opera and the Munich Opera Festival, and Floria Tosca in Puccini's Tosca at the Zurich Opera House.

In the 2016/2017 opera season she sang in Cavalleria rusticana by Pietro Mascagni (as Santuzza at the Zurich Opera House), Salome (as Salome at the Deutsche Oper Berlin), and Die Gezeichen by Franz Schreker (as Carlotta Nardi at the Munich Opera Festival).

The 2017/2018 opera season took Naglestad to the Zurich Opera House as Salome and Minnie and to the Deutsche Oper Berlin as Salome and Floria Tosca.

Other roles Catherine Naglestad has played over the course of her career include Amelia in Verdi's Un ballo in maschera and the title role in Puccini's Manon Lescaut . She sang the complete opera cycle Der Ring des Nibelungen by Richard Wagner in Amsterdam .

In 2006 Catherine Naglestad was appointed chamber singer in Stuttgart . In the same year, Opernwelt magazine voted her Singer of the Year for her role portraits of Norma and Alceste. The Dallas Opera presented her with the Debut Artist of the Year Award for her Tosca in Puccini's opera of the same name.

Catherine Naglestad can also be seen and heard on a number of DVDs , including Wagner's The Flying Dutchman and Mozart's La clemenza di Tito on the Opus Arte label, as well as Gluck's Alceste , Handel's Alcina and Mozart's Die Entführung aus dem Serail from Arthaus.
