Charles James "Charlie" Taylor (born September 18, 1993 in York ) is an English football player . The left full-back trained at Leeds United was a regular at his home club between 2014 and 2017 before moving to the Premier League at Burnley FC in the summer of 2017 .

Career

Leeds United

Taylor was born in York, played on the youth teams of the nearby club Leeds United and was part of the training program there from summer 2010 after leaving school. He was regularly represented as a left full-back in the U-18 selection and in the second half of the 2010/11 season he played nine games for the reserve team. He then signed his first professional contract (for three years) with the second division club in May 2011 and played two international matches for the English U-19 team in October 2011 on the occasion of a tournament in Limoges, France . Leeds' then coach Simon Grayson rated Taylor one of the club's greatest talents, counting the left foot and stamina as one of the strengths. Before his 18th birthday, Taylor made his debut in the first team, first on August 9, 2011 by substitution in the League Cup against Bradford City and on September 10, 2011 in the second division as a replacement for the suspended Aidy White against Crystal Palace . In the 3-2 win against "Palace" he prepared the first goal for Ross McCormack , but despite a good performance, he had to give way to White in the following games.

To gain more match practice, Taylor joined the fourth division Bradford City on loan for a month in early 2012 . At the end of August 2012, he moved to York, the city of his birth, after the club York City , which was based there, also rose to the fourth division. Although he was only second choice there behind Jamal Fyfield on left-back, the loan deal was extended from an original one to two months before Taylor returned to Leeds in late October 2012. At the end of the current 2012/13 season he was briefly in the top Scottish league for Inverness Caledonian Thistle and reached there - although only in four league games in the starting eleven - a notable fourth place in the final table . In mid-October 2013, Taylor moved again on loan to the fourth English division, now to Fleetwood Town . This engagement was initially designed for only one month. However, since Fleetwood's trainer Graham Alexander was very pleased with Taylor's performances, business continued until the end of the 2013-14 season. Together, the club, which had only risen to the professional division of the Football League in 2012 , qualified for the play-off games. There they prevailed against Taylor's home club York City in the semifinals and rose to the third division via the 1-0 final victory over Burton Albion - Taylor played a key role in this success as a regular. Leeds United rewarded this positive upward trend with a new three-year contract for Taylor until 2017.

From the 2014/15 season, Taylor was an integral part of the Leeds United first team. As a competitor in his position, he was initially the captain Stephen Warnock "in the way", but when he injured himself shortly before the turn of the year, the circumstance allowed Taylor a longer period of operations. This led in the further development that Warnock moved to Derby County and Taylor got the long-awaited regular place. In the 4-2-3-1 system of coach Neil Redfearn Taylor also played on the left wing - with Gaetano Berardi at left-back - and in this more offensive role he scored on 6 April 2015 at 3: 4 against the Wolverhampton Wanderers be first goal in professional football. In total, Taylor completed 100 competitive games in the three years mentioned before his era in Leeds ended controversially. Rumors of an imminent move to the Premier League had persisted, as Taylor was considered one of the best left-backs below the top English division. Before the start of the 2016-17 season, Taylor finally asked to be allowed to move but Leeds United insisted on keeping the contract. In terms of sport, the 2016/17 season was also suboptimal. A series of 52 starting XI appearances came to an end for Taylor in December 2016 due to an injury and after his return he had to fight his well-playing competitor Gaetano Berardi. The discord reached its low point before the last day of the game, when Taylor refused to play, according to Redfearn's successor Garry Monk - Leeds United had almost certainly missed the qualification for the playoff games, although mathematically this was still possible despite a significantly worse goal difference .

Burnley FC

In July 2017, Taylor signed a four-year Premier League deal with Burnley FC . It was Sean Dyche's first signing of the transfer window and as Taylor was under 24, Leeds United had to pay training compensation. There was initially disagreement about the amount; only shortly before this was determined by a tribunal, the parties agreed according to press reports in the region between six and seven million pounds. After initially eleven appearances in the debut season 2017/18 (ten of them in the Premier League ), Taylor conquered a regular position on the left side of defense in the following season, played all top division games and also played regularly in the Europa League .
