Chyžné (until 1927 also "Chyžnô" in Slovak; Hungarian Hizsnyó - until 1907 Hisnyó ) is a municipality in the center of Slovakia with 420 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019), which belongs to the Okres Revúca , a district of the Banskobystrický kraj and in the traditional landscape Gemer lies.

The municipality is located in the Revúcka vrchovina mountains below the Stolické vrchy Mountains , both part of the Slovak Ore Mountains , and lies on the left bank of the Muráň in its valley. The height in the municipal area of ​​19.5 km² varies from 280  m nm to 1409  m nm (Mount Kohút). The immediate area of ​​the village has been deforested, beech forests and hornbeams grow in the northern part. The center of the village lies at an altitude of 299  m nm and is eight kilometers from Revúca .

history

The place was first mentioned in writing in 1427 as Hyznow , but based on the Gothic church, the village already existed in the late 13th century. Until the end of the Middle Ages, Chyžné belonged to the Jelšava estate , in the 16th century the village changed to that of the Muráň castle . In 1556 the village was ravaged by the Turks and had to pay tribute to them for 40 years.

In 1828 there were 82 houses and 734 inhabitants. In addition to agriculture and sheep breeding, mining was important for a long time (from the 16th to the middle of the 20th century) and the inhabitants worked in the ironworks in the area and as carters.

Until 1918, the place in Gemer and Kleinhont County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia, or now Slovakia.

According to the 2011 census, Chyžné had 420 inhabitants, including 359 Slovaks, 11 Roma, 6 Magyars and 1 Czech. 48 residents gave no answer. 143 residents supported the Protestant Church, 85 residents the Roman Catholic Church, and 15 residents the Evangelical Methodist Church. 107 inhabitants were without religious denomination and the denomination of 58 inhabitants has not been determined.

Attractions

  • Roman Catholic Church of the Annunciation (Slovak Kostol Zvestovania Panne Márii ) in Gothic style from the second half of the 13th century. The single-nave church houses medieval paintings on the walls and the vault of the presbytery as well as a late Gothic side altar from 1506, the work of the sculptor Paul von Leutschau
  • Protestant church in classicist style from 1886
  • The grave and headstone of Samo Tomášik (1813–1887), who spent much of his life here and who finally died in 1877. A memorial plaque in the village is dedicated to him.
