Jon Stevens Corzine (born January 1, 1947 in Taylorville , Illinois ) is an American bank manager and politician ( Democratic Party ).

Life

education and profession

Corzine grew up in Illinois on a small farm in Willey Station near the small town of Taylorville . After finishing school, he studied at the University of Illinois , where he received a Bachelor of Arts in 1969 . From 1969 to 1975 he was a member of the US Marine Corps Reserves . Corzine also worked in the financial sector and worked as a portfolio analyst at the Continental Illinois National Bank in Chicago . From 1970 he attended the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business and received a Master of Business Administration there in 1973 . Corzine has now started working for Bank Ohio , a regional bank in Columbus , Ohio . He started working for Goldman Sachs in 1975 and moved to New Jersey with his family . In 1980, he became a partner at Goldman Sachs. In 1994, he became Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO). The company went public under his leadership . In 1999 he was replaced by Henry Paulson as Chairman and CEO.

Political career

In November 2000, Corzine was elected a Democrat to the United States Senate, where he represented the state of New Jersey from January 3, 2001 to January 17, 2006, when he stepped down to become the 54th governor of New Jersey. He prevailed against his Republican rival Douglas Forrester in the 2005 gubernatorial election with 53.47% , replacing Senate President Richard Codey , who had been acting since the resignation of the original governor, James McGreevey . Corzine's vacant seat in the United States Senate was taken over by former Democratic Congressman Bob Menendez .

On April 12, 2007, Corzine suffered a serious car accident and was in critical condition for some time. Codey took over the provisional role of governor again and represented Corzine until his recovery, until May 7, 2007. On December 17, 2007 Corzine, himself an opponent of the death penalty , signed a law to abolish it in New Jersey. In the gubernatorial election on November 3, 2009, he lost to Republican Chris Christie . His term ended on January 19, 2010 with the inauguration of Christie.

Further professional career

In March 2010 Corzine was named CEO of the financial firm MF Global , which had to file for bankruptcy in 2011 . He resigned from the post in early November 2011. back after regulators had opened an investigation, partly because of the alleged misappropriation of client funds in the amount of about 700 million US dollars .

Corzine is a member of the United Church of Christ . He is the father of three children.
