The GDR ice hockey championship in 1954/55 was dominated by the founding of sports clubs, whose ice hockey sections took over the majority of the best-performing BSG teams to date. According to the association decision, BSG Chemie Granschütz was not allowed to take its place in the top division of the promoters identified in the previous season, but instead had to concentrate on the latter sport as the reigning GDR champion in roller hockey .

The BSG Motor Zwickau team was withdrawn after four games and placed in last place regardless of the sporting result. All the games scheduled in Rostock were canceled without replacement because the ice rink there was not ready in time.

Promotion round to the league 1955/56
The 15 district champions of the GDR were eligible to participate in the league promotion round, but championships were not held in all districts or numerous teams had reported too late.

The representative of the Dresden district , SG Geising , prevailed as the second team . However, these results soon became invalid after a fundamental restructuring of the league system was carried out for the next season. All interested district champions or other representatives were then assigned a place in a newly created third division (2nd division) . In addition to the two teams listed, this affected the following teams:

2 The SC Einheit Berlin started in the preseason under the name BSG Einheit Berliner Bär.
3 SC Motor Berlin started in the preseason under the name BSG Motor Treptow.
4 The HSG Wissenschaft TH Dresden started in the preseason under the name BSG Einheit Dresden Süd.
5 ESG Wissenschaft Leipzig was re-established and took the place of the dissolved BSG Aufbau Südwest Leipzig.
6 The SG Dynamo Rostock started in the preseason under the name BSG Motor.
7 The BSG unit Oberhof started in the preseason under the name BSG Motor Erfurt.
