The GDR ice hockey championship 1968/69 was played in the league again in the mode of a preliminary and subsequent final round. As already practiced in the 1961/62 season , all teams had to qualify for the finals. In the end, after three years, the record champion SG Dynamo Weißwasser triumphed again, separating the defending champion from SC Dynamo Berlin by two points. With the SC Empor Rostock , for the first time, a team threatened to break into the dominance of the two Dynamo teams, which had been going on for years. In the end, the Ostseestädter had to be satisfied with bronze, only one point behind Berlin.
This time the group league was dominated by the BSG Turbine Boxberg . For the first time officially supported by the power plant of the same name as a carrier company , the Lausitzers formed a powerful troop, which in the end - in the absence of ASG Vorwärts from Crimmitschau - was crowned group league champions without major resistance. In the relegation against the weakest league club SC Karl-Marx-Stadt , Boxberg could not change the fact that the amateurs had practically lost their connection to the teams of the performance centers for years.
The SC Karl-Marx-Stadt thus remained in the top division.
