Daniel Clark (politician, 1809)
Daniel Clark (born October 24, 1809 in Stratham , Rockingham County , New Hampshire , † January 2, 1891 in Manchester , New Hampshire) was an American lawyer and politician ( Republican Party ) who represented the state of New Hampshire in the US Senate represented. He then became a federal judge in the federal district court for the district of New Hampshire.
After attending public schools, Daniel Clark continued his education at Hampton Academy and Union College in Schenectady before graduating from Dartmouth College in Hanover in 1834 . He then studied law , was admitted to the bar in 1837 and subsequently practiced in Epping before moving to Manchester in 1839.
In 1842 Clark first moved into the New Hampshire House of Representatives , to which he was a member until 1843. Further terms in this Chamber of Parliament followed in 1846 and from 1854 to 1855. Finally he was elected to the US Senate in 1857, where he succeeded the late James Bell . Clark remained there after re-election from June 27, 1857 until his resignation on July 27, 1866. During this time he was President pro tempore of the Senate between April 26, 1864 and February 19, 1865 . He also temporarily chaired the Committee on Claims .
After his retirement from the Senate, Daniel Clark succeeded Matthew Harvey as a judge on the United States District Court for the District of New Hampshire . He held this office until his death in January 1891. His seat then fell to Edgar Aldrich .
