The title character, daughter of the commandant, cannot remember anything after being raped by a Russian count, even given her pregnancy. The parents are outraged and violate their daughter, who is taking her three children from her first marriage, against the will of her parents. On the day after the Count explains the facts, the wedding takes place at the request of the parents, but in an otherwise empty church.

Reviews
According to the Lexicon of International Films , Kleist's novella in Eric Rohmer's "sensitive film adaptation has become the demonstrative opposite of a sentimental drama". With a sense of the absurdity of the story, Rohmer "exposes the ironic moral criticism of the original in order to develop a cheerful plea for humanity in practice beyond bourgeois conventions."
