Dirk De Wolf (born January 16, 1961 in Aalst , Belgium ) is a former Belgian cyclist .

Athletic career

De Wolf competed as a road racing driver until 1982 as an amateur . In his last amateur season in 1982 he had his greatest successes, for example with victories in the one-day races Troyes-Dijon and Seraing-Aachen-Seraing, as well as winning the British stage race Sealink Race. He also reached eighth place in the amateur individual race of the road world championship .

In 1983 De Wolf signed a professional contract with the Belgian cycling team Boule d'Or. He contested his first major professional driver race at Paris – Roubaix , which he finished in 28th place. De Wolf achieved his first major victory in 1986 when he won the French stage race Four Days of Dunkirk . In the same year he also contested his first Tour de France , which he finished with 64th place. It remained his best placement on the Tour of France, in which he participated five times. He also took part in the two great tours Giro d'Italia and Vuelta a Españapart. At the Giro he appeared twice (1989, 1992), at the Vuelta once (1990), but got out early each time.

De Wolf had a better record when he took part in the so-called monuments of cycling , all of which he contested except for the Tour of Lombardy . At Paris-Roubaix he appeared most frequently with nine participations between 1983 and 1994 and in 1989 he had his best result there with second place. He drove the Tour of Flanders six times from 1986 to 1993, with eighth place in 1989 as the best place. He achieved his only monument victory in 1992 at Liège – Bastogne – Liège (a total of three participations). He also took part in Milan-Sanremo (141st in 1992 and 135th in 1994) , without much success .

De Wolf achieved three placements in the professional decisions of the road world championships. While it was only a disappointing 60th place in 1986, he was runner-up in 1990. In 1991 he reached seventh place in Stuttgart . Also worth mentioning are the starts at the Tour de Suisse , where De Wolf is also listed three times in the result lists: in 1992 as 48th, 1993 and 1994 as 67. The 1994 Tour de Suisse was also his last big race, and De finished at the end of the season Wolf started his career with the French team Novemail-Histor-Laser Computer as a professional driver. He spent most of his professional years with the Belgian racing team Hitachi between 1985 and 1989 . He achieved the best FICP / UCI Road Ranking in 1990 with 47th place. At the UCI World Cup 1991 he came ninth.

In 2009 De Wolf was hired as sports director for the Belgian cycling team Omega Pharma-Lotto .
