Dirt 4 ( spelling : DiRT4 ) is a racing game in a rally setting developed by Codemasters and released in 2017 for Windows , PlayStation 4 and Xbox One . In March 2019, ports for Linux and macOS from Feral Interactive were also released . The computer game is the eleventh offshoot of the Colin McRae Rally series and the successor to Dirt 3 and Dirt Rally . In October 2020, Dirt 5 will be a successor for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Game mechanics

The game offers the opportunity to race in different rally disciplines. In addition to classic rally tracks, there are also the races of rallycross and landrush with stadium trucks and buggies. You can also Gymkhana contest challenges to and the practice facility Dirt Academy to train your driving skills. Various vehicles from different eras of rally history are available, in addition to current cars, for example, cars from the legendary Group A and Group B classes as well as other historic racing cars, such as the Mini Cooper S from 1964 that was used in the Monte Carlo Rally won. The game contains a total of 55 different vehicles.

In the single player career, the player can buy and upgrade the vehicles for money earned in races in the car dealership or on the used market . You can also set up your own racing team for which employees can be engaged, sponsors can be found and facilities can be expanded. With the help of the expanded systems and employed technicians, damaged vehicles can be repaired more quickly, for example.

The routes are located in five different regions: Fitzroy in Australia , Tarragona in Spain , Michigan in the USA , Värmland in Sweden and Powys in Wales . There are routes in the most varied of variations that are procedurally generated . However, the same recurring elements often appear.

The game also offers a multiplayer mode in which players can compete against each other and compare themselves in ranking lists.

A VR mode that might appear at a later date , like in Dirt Rally , was promised, but never published.

The game received mostly good ratings. The GameStar certifies that the game does justice to both the "fun racer" Dirt 3 and the racing simulation Dirt Rally as a successor. It is criticized, however, that the game wants to please everyone and ultimately does not reach the class of its predecessors in their respective disciplines. In particular, the randomly generated routes in just five venues result in deductions in the evaluation. On the other hand, the motivating career mode is praised.

"With DiRT 4, Codemasters has put together an attractive off-road package for a wide audience in which you can find many, but not all, qualities from DiRT Rally."

- Michael Krosta : 4Players

"Playful an absolute stunner, technically not completely round."

- Christian Dörre : PC Games
