Tournament commentary
The tournament director was the former world champion Ryūji Umeda from the host country. The game was initially played in four groups of four players each. For the first time, the shot clock was also introduced for women , so each player had 40 seconds for their shot.
Kazumi Hida, mother of the defending champion Orie Hida , took part in another world championship. Medal chances were also given to the Dutch Therese Klompenhouwer , Karina Jetten and the German-Turkish Gülşen Degener .
However, the group games cause some surprises. Karina Jetten threw the defending champion out of the tournament and Gülşen Degener also had to watch the rest of the tournament from the audience. The finals began with six Asians who only met two Europeans.
However, the final rounds were not successful for the remaining Europeans either. The European champion Klompenhouwer, who received a lot of praise, did not reach her usual playing strength at this World Cup and, like her countrywoman Jetten, was eliminated in the quarter-finals. The Koreans did the same and so the semi-finals were a purely Japanese affair. In the final, Natsumi Higashiuchi then prevailed against her opponent Yuko Nishimoto and became the new world champion with the best individual average of the tournament. The title stayed in Japan for the sixth time in a row and the successful streak of Orte Hida, who had previously become world champion five times in a row, was ended.
