Dynasty Warriors ( Japanese 三國 無双 Sangoku Musō (Part 1) / 真 ・ 三國 無双 Shin Sangoku Musō (from Part 2)) is a computer game series with several offshoots from Koei . It covers the historical phase of the Three Kingdoms of China.

The series in turn belongs to the parent Musō series, which also includes the series Sengoku Musō ( Samurai Warriors ), Musō Orochi (Warriors Orochi) , Gundam Musō ( Dynasty Warriors Gundam; Crossover with Gundam ) Hokuto no Musō (Crossover with Hokuto no Ken ) , One Piece Kaizoku Musō (crossover with One Piece ), Troy Musō ( Warriors: Legends of Troy ), Zelda Musō ( Hyrule Warriors ; crossover with The Legend of Zelda ) and Fire Emblem Warriors (crossover with Fire Emblem ).

Description and naming

Dynasty Warriors is itself an offshoot of Koei's turn-based strategy series Romance of the Three Kingdoms ( 三國 志 San guo zhi or Sangokushi ). The first part is a fighting game called Sangokumusō for the Playstation , while the other seven parts of the series are action games that have been released on various consoles. Since the second part of the series differed significantly from the original genre and style of the first, it was published in Japan under the title Shin Sangokumusō . The following titles were then numbered as Shin Sangokumusō 2 and so on. On the international market, however, Shin Sangokumusō appeared as Dynasty Warriors 2 , which resulted in a permanent discrepancy between the numbering in Japanese and the international publications.

For the 4th, 5th and 6th part there is also the action game Dynasty Warriors Empires, which differs from the original game series with some strategic elements. In addition to the console games for Playstation and Xbox, there are also Dynasty Warriors games for the Game Boy Advance , for the PC and for the PSP . In the original parts 2 to 8 it is possible to re-enact battles from the history of China with heroes from Wei , Wu , Shu or the later Han and in parts 7 and 8 additionally from Jin . These parts strictly adhere to the story of the Three Kingdoms period, while the offshoots do not place so much emphasis on the facts.

In the old tradition, this part takes the player to the historical theater of war of ancient China and gives him the choice between a warrior from one of the three domains (Wu, Shu and Wei) or an independent warrior. There are a total of 48 characters with their own storylines, as well as more opponents per screen, more individual bodyguards, more depth of detail and new game modes. An improved and larger arsenal is also offered. As the game progresses, the player unlocks character-specific attacks and combos and thus reaches the respective mission objectives faster. The graphics have been refreshed so that more opponents can act with less background fog, which caused trouble in the previous parts. 38 cards with 30% more size need to be explored. The "Stronghold system" known from Dynasty Warriors 4: Empires (there are different camps that have to be conquered: This makes the game easier to control) is taken over. A new type of difficulty is also included (chaos), whereby the game with the starting weapons can hardly be won.
