Publication and promotion

The first release of once took place as a single download on October 5, 2018. To promote the song, there was a live performance during the Bambi Awards 2018 - during which Forster was also awarded in the "National Music" category - as well as in the ProSieben Shows 1:30 and Win Your Song , at Luke's! The year and me and during the final show for the eighth season of The Voice of Germany , where he sang the song in a duet with his protégé Jessica Schaffler. Furthermore, the piece accompanied a commercial for Forster's fourth studio album Liebe and a commercial from Sat.1 , in which the “Sat.1 Highlights at the end of the year” were presented. Both spots were broadcast in various commercial breaks on all ProSiebenSat.1 Media channels.

background information

In Once , Forster worked with the African Children's Choir , a children's choir with singers aged seven to twelve from different nations in Africa. This can be heard repeatedly during the entire song in the background with the exclamation "Once". Forster discovered the children's choir through a documentary on Netflix . According to his own statements, he immediately knew that he “had to” work with them. Forster wanted this African “choir vibe” in his music, which is why he flew to Entebbe ( Uganda ) with his team . There they went to the studio together to record the choir singing.

content

The lyrics to once are written in German. Both the music and the text were written jointly by Mark Forster, Tobias Kuhn, Ralf Christian Mayer, Daniel Nitt and Philipp Steinke. Musically, the song moves in the area of pop music . The tempo is 128 beats per minute . In terms of content, the song deals with the topics of happiness and pain as well as their transience. In Once it comes to the moments that are so precious and changing, that they can not repeat. That is, among other things, the first love or the first moment in a strange city when you realize: "Now I have really grown up". The first moment when you realize: “All the hardship was worth it, it has come true, people listen to you when you sing; they like the songs you wrote for them ”. But once could also stand for the first lovesickness or the first loss of a person.

The song begins with the first verse, followed by a bridge and, for the first time, the chorus . The first chorus is followed by the second stanza. This is followed by a repeating " C-Part " (intermediate part) as well as the also repeating refrain. The song ends with the outro , which consists of the repetitive C part, the last line of which “Because that makes it even more worthwhile!” Has been replaced in the repetition by the last line “And I was there fortunately”.

“Once, once - that never comes back.
It stays at one time - but luckily I was there.
I can't have everything again - joy, sadness, love, madness.
Once - and luckily I was there. "

- Refrain, original excerpt

The German-language online magazine laut.de is of the opinion that the music video shows Forster in vlogger style; funny home videos of people who achieve something great. The private home video and cell phone recordings are a selection of fan submissions. A few weeks before the video was shot, Forster called on his fans to send him videos with “unique moments” of themselves. Forster himself was amazed at the great response and the lively participation. In the end, he and Frank made the selection together.
