Population development of Cologne
This article shows the population development of Cologne in tabular and graphical form.
On December 31, 2016, the " official population " of Cologne was 1,075,935 according to the information and technology department of North Rhine- Westphalia (only main residences and after comparison with the other state offices ). Cologne has been a metropolis again since 2010 after crossing this line for a year in 1975. It is the fourth metropolis in Germany. As of December 31, 2017, the Office for Urban Development and Statistics of the City of Cologne reported a population of 1,084,795.
Population development
In 50 AD Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium , an urban Roman settlement in the area of Cologne, became the administrative capital of Lower Germany. The city had about 30,000 inhabitants at that time. After looting in the 3rd and 4th centuries (the Teutons conquered the city in 275, the Franks 355), the population fell to 15,000. In the High Middle Ages , Cologne gained in importance; alongside Paris, it was at times the most important city in continental Europe. In 1475 Cologne was raised to the status of a Free Imperial City . With around 40,000 inhabitants, it was the largest city in the Holy Roman Empire of the German nation .
During the early modern period , the population grew only slowly and fell again and again because of the numerous wars, epidemics and famine. In 1553 a terrible plague epidemic broke out in Cologne. On individual days 150, 200, 250 and more people died. By Michaelmas (September 29) there were 20,000 dead, by Christmas 25,000. With the beginning of industrialization in the 19th century, Cologne began to experience strong population growth. If the population of the city was around 40,000 in 1807, exactly as high as around 1430, it already exceeded the limit of 100,000 in 1852, making Cologne a major city .
After that, the population of Cologne rose relatively slowly compared to Munich (1880 = 230,000) or cities in the Ruhr area up to around 1880. The reason for this was the medieval fortification ring, which did not allow for greater growth. After its demolition in the 1880s, Cologne was able to make up some of the deficit. Between 1885 and 1895 the population doubled from 160,000 to 320,000 people. The incorporation of almost all suburbs on April 1, 1888 with a total of 85,000 inhabitants contributed to this.
The incorporation of the city of Kalk (1905 = 25,478 inhabitants) and the municipality of Vingst (1905 = 4,819 inhabitants) on April 1, 1910 brought an increase of around 34,000 people. With the incorporation of the suburbs of Mülheim am Rhein (1910 = 53,425 inhabitants) and Merheim (1910 = 23,604 inhabitants) on April 1, 1914, Cologne grew by 81,699 people. In the census of December 5, 1917, a total local population of 609,244 people was determined. According to the economics department of the War Food Office, these included 53,176 military personnel and 4,847 prisoners of war. On April 1, 1922, the mayor's office in Worringen (1919 = 7,034 inhabitants) came to Cologne.
The effects of the Second World War are clearly visible . Large parts of the city were destroyed by area bombing . On May 30, 1942, the first air raid with over 1000 bombers (" Operation Millennium ") was in which 469 people were killed. After a total of 262 air raids, 95 percent of the old town was destroyed by the end of the war. On March 6, 1945, American troops took the city. The population sank in the course of the war from 772,000 in May 1939 to 40,000 in March 1945. The return of the forced evacuees and the influx of refugees and displaced persons from the eastern German regions caused the population to rise rapidly. In 1959, as many people lived in the city as before the war.
In the 1970s, Cologne was briefly met with over a million inhabitants as a result of the incorporation of the “ Cologne Act ” , which was enacted specifically for this purpose : in the course of the last incorporation on January 1, 1975, the population reached one million - until 2012 more historic Peak. After the city of Wesseling was spun off again on July 1, 1976, the number of inhabitants again fell below the million mark. After falling to 914,336 residents in 1986, the city's population increased by 8.9 percent (81,084 people) by 2008. With 995,420 inhabitants, it was fourth among German cities and first within North Rhine-Westphalia. At the end of May 2010, the population then exceeded the million mark again at 1,000,298.
The following overview shows the number of inhabitants according to the respective territorial status. Up to 1807 these are mostly estimates, then census results (¹) or official updates by the city administration (until 1970) and the State Statistical Office (from 1971). From 1834 the information relates to the “customs clearance population”, from 1871 to the “local population”, from 1925 to the resident population and since 1987 to the “population at the place of the main residence”. Before 1834, the number of inhabitants was determined according to inconsistent survey methods.

The consumer group statistics of the Reich Statistical Office, which were prepared by the Federal Statistical Office and published in 1953, show a more precise process . According to the small consumer group statistics, the civilian population served in Cologne at the beginning of February 1943 comprised 643,634 people (including 20,122 group caterers), at the end of August that year 465,924 (including 31,901 group caterers), at the beginning of February 1944 again 498,029 (including 36,211 group caterers), and in mid-August 449,732 (including 35,525 Communal caterers) and in October / November 1944 454,825 people (including 35,748 communal caterers).
