Emanuel Hoffmann (philologist)
Emanuel Hoffmann (born April 11, 1825 in Neisse ; † December 6, 1900 in Vienna ) was an Austrian classical philologist .
Life
Hoffmann studied in Breslau , especially with Friedrich Haase , received his doctorate in 1848 with the dissertation De Plautinae Amphitruonis exemplari et fragmentis and then went on study trips through Italy and France. In 1850 he was appointed associate professor of classical philology at the University of Graz . Six years later, he accepted an appointment at the University of Vienna , where, as a full professor, he played a decisive role in the reorganization of the Classical Philology Department. He was appointed a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences in Vienna and was dean of the Philosophical Faculty in the academic year 1868/1869 . In 1896 he retired. Shortly before his death he published his important edition of the De civitate Dei by Augustine in the Corpus Scriptorum Ecclesiasticorum Latinorum (CSEL 1899). He was buried at the Vienna Central Cemetery .
