Engwilen is a former municipality of the then municipal municipality of Wäldi and a village in the canton of Thurgau in Switzerland . Engwilen has belonged to the political municipality of Wäldi since 1995 .

geography

Engwilen is located on the southern slope of the Seerücken near the Autobahn 7 Winterthur - Kreuzlingen .

history

The village was mentioned in a document between 1301 and 1307 under the name Engwille . In the Middle Ages , Engwilen was located on the southwestern edge of the former Bischofshöri and belonged to the Episcopal-Constantine Bailiwick of Gottlieben . The Lower Court of Engwilen was owned by the three free Engwiler families, Egloff, Engwiler and Meyer, as a fiefdom of the Bishop of Constance until 1798 . An opening in 1532 regulated against, among others, the obligations of the bishop's chair: When traveling the bishop, such as Rome, the villagers were required to have a mule trains to make (known Sintlehen).

Engwilen, which has been reformed by the majority since the Reformation, still belongs to the parish of Lipperswil today . The few Catholic residents attended mass in the parish of Homburg and have been integrated into the Catholic parish of Kreuzlingen - Emmishofen since 1869 .

In the 19th century, agriculture was replaced by dairy farming, cattle breeding and fruit growing. In 1955 the metal construction company Paul Zöllig AG (today Thur Metall AG) settled in Engwilen. Recently the village has turned into a rural residential community.
