history

Hugelshofen was first mentioned in 1176 as Hugolteshouen . Originally the Bishop of Constance owned real estate in Hugelshofen. From the late Middle Ages to 1798 the village was a so-called high court , which was directly subordinate to the federal governor in Thurgau .

In 1381 a church is mentioned in Hugelshofen. After the attempts to become an independent parish had failed, Hugelshofen ecclesiastically joined the Reformed Alterswilen in 1543 , with which it is still connected today.

In addition to arable and fruit growing, livestock and dairy farming emerged in the second half of the 19th century. In 1862 a cheese dairy was established. At that time there was also a mill and a sawmill. Around 1900, a few embroidery shops and a glue boiler were operated in Hugelshofen. Despite the conversion of farms to residential buildings, Hugelshofen has retained its character as a farming village to this day.
