Life

Marchetto was born on February 20, 1960 in Venice in the house next door to Carlo Goldoni . Already in early childhood he designed paper figures for his little sister and decorations for the family Christmas tree based on the model of Disney cartoons. The carnival in Venice , theater performances and workshops by Lindsay Kemp and dance performances by Pina Bausch later gave him the idea of conceiving his own show.

In the early 1980s Marchetto designed extravagant costumes and masks for the Venice Carnival, which was just experiencing a renaissance. At that time Marchetto was working in his father's company, a repair shop for espresso machines . Inspired by a daydream in which he saw Marilyn Monroe dressed entirely in paper, he created his first paper costume at this time. In 1988 he received the Golden Lion for his creations at the Venice Entertainment Festival .

In the following years he created more paper figures. With just a few costumes, Marchetto presented his show at the Zanzara d'Oro, the "Golden Mosquito", an annual competition for young comedians. Marchetto was awarded first prize there and soon appeared on television and in cabaret events. He developed more and more characters and people and soon his first theater show, a play written and staged by Daniele Sala that dealt with the life of the quick-change artist Leopoldo Fregoli, who was active in the early 20th century . Marchetto sang, recited and transformed here in quick succession with the help of his paper costumes. After four performances, however, he stopped the show because it did not meet his expectations.

After the last performance, he met the fashion and costume designer Sosthen Hennekam , with whom he would often work in the following years . Hennekam devised numerous improvements, for example origami techniques, with which it was possible to change costumes even faster. Their first joint appearance at the Festa dell'Unita in Bologna led to further television appearances and guest performances throughout Italy.

A year later, the London producer Glynis Henderson invited Marchetto to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe . Marchetto accepted and added 18 new cardboard costumes to his catalog, including Queen Elizabeth II , Freddie Mercury , Tina Turner and the Venus de Milo . The show in Edinburgh got off to a slow start, but after a positive review by Malcolm Hay ( Time Out ) the remaining dates were quickly sold out. After several tours through the United Kingdom , guest appearances in London's West End and at international festivals, Marchetto and Hennekam were nominated for the Best Entertainer at the Laurence Olivier Awards in 1994 . That same year, Granada Television Celebrations produced Paper Marilyn, an hour-long documentary about Marchetto's life and career. The following year Marchetto appeared at the first MTV Europe Music Awards in Berlin. Further international engagements followed, including a four-month guest performance at the Parisian Théâtre Grévin , a Germany tour with Erasure and an appearance at the Radio City Music Hall in New York City . In 1995 Marchetto received the Performance d'Acteur Festival in Cannes and in 1996 the Sebastià Gasch Prize in Barcelona .

In 1998 Marchetto was invited to the Royal Variety Performance , which is broadcast annually by the BBC . He was also commissioned to do a show for the Dutch royal family on the occasion of Queen Beatrix's birthday .

In the same year he celebrated his premiere in the Paris Auditorium of Saint-Germain with many new French characters, in winter he played in La Cigale . He was also featured on Patrick Sébastien's television program and the Star Académie show. Marchetto's show was again in the USA that year: in Los Angeles, Napa Valley and Austin (Texas) , and he also appeared on theaters in Hong Kong , Singapore , Mannheim , Düsseldorf and Berlin.
