The Farrnbach is a 22.6 km long, left and western tributary of the Regnitz in Bavaria . Today the Farrnbach is increasingly addressed in a masculine form ("the Farrnbach"), but historically correct - as with the Kirchfarrnbach - the female form. It is a fine material rich, carbonate low mountain range of the Keuper .

geography

The stream rises about 1.4 kilometers south-southwest of the Wilhermsdorf district of Kreben as a Hardbächlein in the area of the Entznersweiher. The Hardbächlein flows along the Hardbächleinteiche in an arc to the northeast in the direction of Kirchfarrnbach . In the south of the village comes the Untere Krebener Graben from the left; from this confluence the body of water is called Kirchfarrnbach. The (or the) Kirchfarrnbach flows in a north-easterly direction between the Dillenberg and the district road FÜ 11 past the Wittinghof to Keidenzell . In the south of Keidenzell comes the Dürrnfarrnbach from the left; from this confluence the water is called Farrnbach. It now flows in an easterly direction between the Dillenberg and the district road FÜ 16 to Hammerschmiede and flows through the Traumsee, an approximately two-hectare pond, southwest of the town. Other places on the Farrnbach are Gonnersdorf , Greimersdorf and Schwadermühle . From the Schwadermühle on, shortly before crossing under the state road St 2409 , the Farrnbach becomes a second order body of water . Southeast of the Am Farrnbach industrial park (incorrectly named masculine) the Mühlbach is diverted to the Erzleitenmühle and the Kohlersmühle . The Farrnbach crosses under the southwest bypass in an underpass between the two mills . To the west of Hiltmannsdorf , the Mühlbach flows back into the Farrnbach. The Farrnbach flows north past Hiltmannsdorf and shortly afterwards reaches the Fürth urban area. First flowing southwest of Burgfarrnbach , it crosses the place between the Church of St. John the Baptist and Burgfarrnbach Castle and then crosses under Würzburger Strasse ( Kreisstrasse FÜs 2 ) and the Nuremberg – Würzburg railway at Geißäckerstrasse . The Farrnbach now follows the Geißäckerstraße to the Main-Danube Canal . It crosses under the canal and the Hafenstrasse and reaches Unterfarrnbach ; after crossing the village, it flows between Mühltalstrasse and the Nuremberg – Bamberg railway in a north-east direction. After crossing under the FÜs 1 district road , the Farrnbach flows into the Regnitz north of the railway bridge on the railway line to Bamberg .

Like most of the western tributaries of the Regnitz, the Farrnbach has a low gradient and a low runoff as well as sand structures in the bank area and in the river bed .

environment

Water quality

The Farrnbach has water quality class II-III throughout .

Chemical-physical parameters (mean values), observation period 2000–2005:

Measuring point Water temperature pH O 2 NH 4 - N NO 3 - N P tot. Cl
above the mouth 13.0 ° C 8.1 10.1 mg / l 0.25 mg / l 9.0 mg / l 0.208 mg / l 51 mg / l

Renaturation

Since 1997 the formerly straightened Farrnbach has been renatured again by the Nuremberg Water Management Office in the Mühltalstraße area , based on the course of the brook from 1948. This created small biotopes that provide nesting sites for birds and insects as well as spawning grounds for fish and hunting grounds for wading water birds.

fauna

In the Farrnbach there are trout , aitel and white fish . The ponds fed by the Farrnbach are stocked with pikeperch , carp , grass carp , tench , silver carp , pike , crucian carp and eel .

As part of efforts to bring the crayfish (Astacus astacus) back home in Middle Franconia, the Farrnbach in the Fürth urban area was stocked with these animals in 2005.
