Fatima Grimm

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Fatima Grimm (* July 25, 1934 as Helga Lili Wolff in Munich ; † May 6, 2013 in Hamburg ) was a German translator , author and speaker on the subject of Islam . She gained fame through her commitment as a convert in Germany's Muslim community , for example as a functionary in the German Muslim League Hamburg .

Live and act

Fatima Grimm was born as the daughter of SS-Obergruppenführer and General of the Waffen-SS Karl Wolff . On her 26th birthday in 1960, she made her Islamic creed in Ibrahim Gacaoglu's Munich apartment . In 1962 she moved to Pakistan with her then husband Omar Abdul Aziz, a Czech Muslim whom she met in 1958 and married in 1960 . Three years later she returned to Germany with her husband, where she became involved in the Munich community. In 1983 the marriage was divorced by mutual agreement. On April 1, 1984, she married the widowed German convert Abdul Karim Grimm (1933–2009), whose children she had met at an raUmra , and moved to live with him in Hamburg.

For the first time Grimm appeared publicly, then still Fatima Heeren-Sarka , in the minutes of April 11, 1971 of the General Assembly of the Munich Mosque Construction Commission (forerunner of the Islamic Community in Germany ) as "Secretary" in the newly elected "Executive Committee". In the decades that followed, she wrote and translated various books and authored numerous articles, some of which appeared in the journal Al-Islam . In her journalism she mainly devoted herself to topics such as upbringing and the role of women in Islam. The children's magazine Du und der Islam (1978–1984, absorbed into Al-Islam ), which only existed for a short time, was supervised by her. She was also responsible for Al-Islam for several years .

In addition, she worked on a German translation of the Koran in a group of mostly women, including Halima Krausen and Eva-Maria El-Shabassy . It was originally conceived as a translation of the English translation of the Koran by Abdullah Yusuf Ali . The translation contains detailed comments by Abdullah Yusuf Ali, Muhammad Asad , al-Qurtubī , Sayyid Qutb , Daryābādī, Ibn Kathīr , Mawdūdī , al-Suyūṭī and Abdul Hameed Siddiqi , which were taken directly and translated; comments from Sufis or Shiites have been omitted . It was published over 16 years in 24 issues by Al-Islam and finally in five volumes by Abdel-Halim Khafagy in SKD Bavaria Verlag . Along with Muhammad Rassoul 's translation, Grimm's translation is one of the two Koran translations recommended by the Central Council of Muslims in Germany (ZMD) in its 1999 curriculum for Islamic religious instruction . In the guideline “ORIENTATION” of the Institute for Islamic Studies at the Free University of Berlin , Grimm's translation is described as strongly traditionalistic and interpretive as well as “ oriented towards the purposes of mission ”; for the course it is “not recommended”. On the ZMD's islam.de website, Hamida Behr names Grimm's translation of the Koran along with contemporary comments as her “probably greatest legacy”. It is the first translation of the Koran into German developed and published jointly by Sunnis and Shiites. “Islamic scholars have not yet dealt with their work”, but their comment can be found “in the new departments for Islamic theology”.

A few weeks before his death in 1984, Grimm's father Karl Wolff made the Islamic creed; at the grave, the daughter said the funeral prayer in the presence of representatives of the Islamic Center Munich (IZM) .

Since April 1999 at the latest, Grimm was an honorary member of the ZMD's advisory board. In addition, she sat (with her husband Abdul Karim) on the board of the German Muslim League eV Hamburg, was a member of the Liberal-Islamic Association and was involved in the Islamic Center Hamburg ; There was a small mosque of their own on their property in Hamburg. With her husband Abdul Karim she was present several times at meetings of German-speaking Muslims . In the summer of 2002 Grimm accompanied Nadeem Elyas and other representatives of the ZMD on a tour of the Islamic World League through Germany.

A lecture first given by Grimm in 1975 received special attention, which was published by the IZM as a brochure under the title The Upbringing of Our Children in 1995 and has been disseminated again and again since then (for example at the Berlin Mevlana Mosque book fair in 2007). This “most controversial publication by Fatima Grimm” because of the family portrait expressed in it using terms such as jihad and dār al-Harb , portrays the growing up of children into a “mass of half-educated nationalists , communists or humanists ” as a horror picture in the absence of an Islamic upbringing . Another part of upbringing is to teach children who are open to it from the age of 15 on the concept of jihad as a defense of the faith: “This includes that we as mothers are not cowardly and anxious to protect our sons from any danger. To [...] Rather, we should give them always keep in mind what it is a great honor for every Muslim, fighting for the cause of Islam with the weapon in his hand. "The Constitutional Protection Report 2010 of the State Office for State Protection Baden-Wuerttemberg is found that an IZM publication written by Grimm advocates the reintroduction of the Hadd penalties . In a brochure published by the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung in 2003, it is stated that Grimm has "meanwhile distanced himself from her work". In a conversation conducted with Nadeem Elyas in 2005 and published by the Institute for Islamic Issues in 2006 , the latter said that Grimm had taken a position and said that the text was 30 years old, that by no means did she mean the armed struggle and that she meant it for the Definitely do not advocate the present.

Khadija Katja Wöhler-Khalfallah quotes Grimm from the work written by Aisha B. Lemu on Woman and Family Life in Islam as an example of fundamentalist , anti-secular and jihad-friendly polemics: “(...) This effort (jihad) can be in the hour of Emergency, both with the sword and with the pen, with the shovel as with the scalpel or even with the sewing machine or the wooden spoon. Jihad is a fight against all forces that attack Islam from within and without. Whether these attacks are aimed at mocking Islam, weakening its traditions and customs, or undermining its political power, they must be taken very seriously because they seek to destroy the roots of our heritage. "

In a research report by Ralph Ghadban , Grimm's book Islam through the eyes of a woman is named as one of the most popular titles by Muslim authors in Germany. In this context Ghadban names " Hofmann , von Denffer and Grimm" as belonging to the "current of the Muslim Brotherhood ", "whereby von Denffer and Grimm belonged to their most radical wing".

Grimm was the mother of a son and a daughter who died early from his first marriage, as well as three stepchildren from his second marriage. She died on the evening of May 6, 2013 after a long, serious illness in Hamburg.
