Felix Anton Scheffler (born August 29, 1701 in Mainburg , † January 10, 1760 in Prague ) was a German painter and fresco artist in the art-historical epoch of the Baroque and Rococo .

Life

After an apprenticeship with his father Wolfgang Scheffler in Mainburg, Lower Bavaria , Felix Anton became a pupil of Cosmas Damian Asam in Munich around 1720 . From around 1726 he deepened his knowledge with the Stuttgart court painter JC Grooth.

His independent first work was a bedroom decoration in Durlach Castle in 1727/1728. A year later he - together with his brother Christoph Thomas - frescoed the staircase of the Worms bishop's court for Franz Ludwig von Pfalz-Neuburg , who was also Mainz Elector and Prince-Bishop of Wroclaw and Grand Master of the Teutonic Order . On his recommendation, the brothers went to Silesia in 1730 to paint the Kreuzherrenkirche in Neisse . While Christoph Thomas then returned to Bavaria, Felix Anton settled in Breslau in 1732 , where he married Maria Barbara Heigel in the same year and received numerous commissions for frescoes and paintings from noble families and church institutions in the following years. In 1734 he was appointed court painter by Prince Bishop Philipp Ludwig von Sinzendorf .

After expanding his activities to Bohemia and Moravia from 1743 , he settled in Prague in 1747. After the death of his brother Christoph Thomas in 1756, he returned to Bavaria and completed his painting for the Benedictine altar of the Ettal monastery church and painted the ceiling paintings of the Ignatius chapel and the sacristy in the Landsberg Jesuit church. His main Bavarian work is the painting of the Baumburg monastery church .

Felix Anton Scheffler mainly painted frescoes and altarpieces in the high baroque style. With his last works, especially St. Margaretha in Baumburg, he turned to the Rococo.
