Four Weddings and a Funeral (Original title: Four Weddings and a Funeral ) is a British film comedy from 1994. It marked the international breakthrough for the actor Hugh Grant .

Friends Charles, Tom, Scarlett, Fiona, Matthew, Gareth and David live in London. Charles and Scarlett share a small apartment. Tom and Fiona are siblings and live in a large town house. Gareth and Matthew are a couple. David is the deaf brother of Charles. At a friend's wedding, which all seven attend, Charles, who doesn't want to commit himself, meets the fun-loving American Carrie. After spending a night of love together, she reveals to him that she will return to America.
At another wedding some time later, he meets Carrie again. She is with her much older fiancé, and Charles painfully realizes that he loves her. At the dinner, Charles encounters a number of former partners, including his devoted ex-girlfriend Henrietta, whom Fiona only calls "Duckface" (duck face).
The third wedding takes place between Carrie and her fiancé Hamish at his castle in Scotland. On this occasion, Fiona Charles confesses her love that has existed for years, but he cannot return it. Gareth dies unexpectedly of a heart attack during the wedding reception. At the funeral, in which Carrie is also attending despite the planned honeymoon, Matthew gives a moving funeral oration in which he recites the poem " Funeral Blues " by the English writer WH Auden . Charles realizes how much Matthew loved Gareth.
The fourth wedding is said to be that of Charles and Henrietta. Shortly before the ceremony, Charles meets Carrie and learns that she has separated from her husband. Confused and at a loss, Charles disappears into a side chapel and asks his deaf brother David for advice: He still loves Carrie and not Henrietta, whom he is about to marry. When David can't think of a solution, Charles and Henrietta come to the altar. When the priest asks the congregation if anyone has an objection, David answers. In sign language , which he has Charles translate, he explains that Charles loves another woman. When Charles confirms this to the priest, he is knocked to the ground by the angry Henrietta.
After the wedding, Carrie seeks out Charles, who asks her in the pouring rain not to be married to him for the rest of her life , a proposal that Carrie gladly accepts.
During the credits, photos can be seen that, in addition to happy, newly married couples (Henrietta, David and Scarlett and their respective loves, Tom with his cousin and a Labrador, Fiona with a picture of Prince Charles and Matthew with a new boyfriend) also Charles and Show Carrie - not as a married couple, but with a young child.

Elton John contributed two exclusive tracks to the music for the film. The real musical winners of the film were Wet Wet Wet . With their cover version of the Troggs song Love is All Around , the band was number 1 in the British charts for 15 weeks in the summer of 1994, as long as only two other singles before that. This was also the reason why in the movie Actually ... Love , in which Hugh Grant also stars, a cover version of the cover version is used as the theme song.
The song Jerusalem , which is sung in the church, was set to music in 1916 by C. Hubert H. Parry based on the poem And did those feet in ancient time by William Blake .
Filming
The action takes place in different areas of England and Scotland, but the filming took place exclusively in London and the surrounding counties. The various churches and castles shown can also be found there accordingly. The church seen at the memorial service, unusual because it is in the middle of a factory site, is St. Clement in West Thurrock , Essex.
For the US market, every scene that contained the word " fuck " had to be shot a second time. In the script text, fuck had to be replaced by the more harmless words blimey or crumbs (German for example "crap" or "Herrje"). A synchronization of the sound would not have been enough, as you could still clearly read fuck on the lips of actor Hugh Grant . Screenwriter Richard Curtis and director Mike Newell later wrote in their filming diary that they had never swore and fucked as much as they did during the making of this film because of the obligation to adhere to this rule . Because so many scenes had to be shot a second time just to bypass the seven dirty words , the cost of the film increased by about 20%. The shooting itself lasted almost six months, as scenes that were complex and complex in terms of shooting technology and which featured fuck had to be shot a second time.
