Friedrich Wilhelm Karl von Grabow , also Carl (born October 18, 1783 in Berlin ; † October 21, 1869 there ) was a Prussian general of the infantry .

Life

origin

He came from the Brandenburg noble family von Grabow and was the son of Georg Hartwig von Grabow (1737-1819) and his wife Luise Charlotte Wilhelmine, née Countess von Sparr († 1797). His father was a Prussian captain a. D. , most recently in the depot battalion of the "von Zenge" infantry regiment .

Military career

Grabow visited the cadet house in Berlin from April 4, 1796 and was then employed on March 22, 1801 as an ensign in the Guard Regiment of the Prussian Army . Promoted to Second Lieutenant there on December 17, 1803 , Grabow took part in the Battle of Auerstedt during the 1806 campaign and was briefly captured by the French after the surrender of Prenzlau . After the Peace of Tilsit he was employed on November 12, 1808 in the Guards Regiment on foot and rose to captain and company commander until June 27, 1812 . As such, Grabow took part in the battles at Großgörschen and Bautzen at the beginning of the Wars of Liberation against Napoleon Bonaparte , was promoted to major on June 2, 1813 with a patent from August 2, 1813 , and finally fought at Leipzig , Bar-sur-Aube , Brienne and Paris . For his achievements, Grabow received both classes of the Iron Cross , the Order of St. Vladimir IV. Class, the Order of St. Anna II. Class with diamonds and the Knight's Cross of the Military Karl Friedrich Order of Merit .

After the peace treaty Grabow was promoted to lieutenant colonel on October 3, 1815 and appointed commander of the 8th Infantry Regiment (Leib-Infanterie-Regiment) in Frankfurt (Oder) on May 23, 1816 . In this position, promoted to colonel on March 30, 1822 , Grabow became commander of the 8th Infantry Brigade in Erfurt on March 30, 1832 and major general a year later . During the autumn maneuvers in Silesia in 1835 he was commanded to serve with Grand Duke Michael of Russia and received the Order of St. Stanislaus 1st Class for his services . On March 30, 1838 he was appointed commander of the 2nd division in Danzig and on April 7, 1842 he was promoted to lieutenant general . Since March 14, 1848 Grabow was also governor of Danzig with an allowance of 900 thalers.

During the revolutionary unrest in Germany, from May 29, 1849, Grabow was the commander of the mobile division , which was to be formed from units of the I Army Corps , and was appointed commander of the 3rd division in Stettin on September 22, 1849 . At the same time, Grabow acted in the absence of Lieutenant General Wrangel as leader of the II Army Corps . On November 3, 1849, he was commissioned to lead the corps . Grabow celebrated his 50th anniversary in service in March 1851, was promoted to general of the infantry the following year and appointed commanding general of the II Army Corps. On July 17, 1852 he received the Alexander Nevsky Order and after the autumn maneuvers, in which King Friedrich Wilhelm IV participated, Grabow was appointed chief of the 5th Infantry Regiment . On January 17, 1856, King Grabow made Knight of the Black Eagle Order . Later he received the chain for this high honor. At the same time he was appointed adjutant general of the king, Grabow was put up for disposal on May 5, 1857 with the statutory pension .

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Großgörschen, the king of the 1st Guards Regiment presented him on foot.

Grabow had received the Royal Prussian Order of St. John in 1824 and was thus Knight of Honor of the Order of St. John, restored in 1852.

He was buried in Schorbus after his death .

family

Grabow had married Karoline Sophie von Rochow from the House of Plessow (1794–1877) in Potsdam on January 27, 1812 . The marriage resulted in two daughters:
