German contingent The German squad consisted mainly of world champions from 1990, and Matthias Sammer, the former GDR footballer, joined the team, as was the case at the World Cup two years earlier. René Schneider was also in the squad, but was not used. Ulf Kirsten was not considered for the finals due to a lack of form.
Jürgen Kohler took over the post of captain from world champion captain Lothar Matthäus, who was not nominated by Berti Vogts. Another change was Andreas Köpke as the new “number 1” for the resigned Bodo Illgner .
Kohler only led the team to the opening game, because the German squad's injuries started with the captain. Jürgen Klinsmann took over the office for the rest of the tournament with the exception of the semifinals in which Klinsmann also surrendered the captain's armband to Andreas Möller due to injury. Klinsmann and Sammer became the playmakers of the tournament. Nevertheless, the series of injuries did not end, so that Jens Todt was nominated with the permission of UEFA. For the substitute goalkeepers Oliver Kahn and Oliver Reck, field player jerseys were flocked before the final so that they could be used if necessary to present a full team on the field.
* Jens Todt was nominated before the final with the approval of UEFA because of an injury mishap in the German team .
