James Joseph Gandolfini Jr. (born September 18, 1961 in Westwood, New Jersey , † June 19, 2013 in Rome , Italy ) was an American actor of Italian descent who became known worldwide for his lead role in the series The Sopranos .

Life

Gandolfini was born in Westwood, New Jersey, in 1961 to the Italian immigrants Santa and James Gandolfini Sr.

He grew up in Park Ridge, New Jersey and attended high school there until 1979. He received a Bachelor of Arts in communication from Rutgers University . Before working as an actor, he worked as a bartender and club manager. He began his career on New York Broadway with the play A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams , in which Alec Baldwin also starred. After that, he often played shady, violent characters. Tony Scott gave Gandolfini the supporting role of a sadistic mafia killer in True Romance in 1993 . In 1995 and 1996 he again played Mafia enforcers in Snap Shorty and Not Guilty at the side of well-known colleagues. The critic Roger Ebert praised him for his performance in Not Guilty . With the television series The Sopranos , in which he played the lead role as the head of a mafia family, he achieved his breakthrough. As the lead actor, he got $ 1,000,000 per episode towards the end and won several television awards.

Private life

Gandolfini and his first wife were married from 1999 to December 2002. They had a son together.

On August 30, 2008, he married former model Deborah Lin in her home state of Hawaii . Their daughter was born on October 10, 2012 in Los Angeles .

death

Gandolfini died on June 19, 2013 at the age of 51 during a short vacation in Rome. He had planned to travel to Sicily on June 22, 2013 to receive an award at the Taormina Film Fest . After a sightseeing tour in very intense heat , his 13-year-old son found him unconscious in the bathroom at around 10:00 p.m. local time. He informed the hotel reception, which called an ambulance. Gandolfini, who arrived at the hospital at 10:40 p.m. local time, was pronounced dead at 11 p.m. An autopsy confirmed that he died of a heart attack . His funeral took place in New York on June 27th . According to his will, his daughter, widow, and two sisters inherited his fortune, estimated at around $ 70 million. His only son, Michael, was not included in the will as there was separate life insurance in his favor.

  • Between 1999 and 2007, he was nominated six times for the major US Emmy television award in the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series category (Primetime Emmy for the outstanding leading actor in a television series). Gandolfini won it three times.
  • Between 1999 and 2002 he was nominated four times for the Golden Globe Award in the category Best Actor - Television Series Drama (best actor in a television series) and won it once.
  • He was nominated seven times for the Screen Actors Guild Award in the category Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series and won the trophy three times, making him still the record holder. The Sopranos ensemble, which was nominated seven times for the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series , won it twice.
