Garden railway (model railway)

A garden railroad is a model railroad that is set up either permanently or in a removable manner outdoors as a model railroad system. For operational reasons, model railways of nominal size 0 or larger are mainly used. The IIm gauge , sometimes also referred to as G - G for garden railway - is the most widespread . They are not suitable for passenger transport .

The garden railways of any kind are standardized in the standards of European model railways (NEM), but not the park railways .

General

In general, model trains from nominal size 0 are considered suitable for garden use. Smaller nominal sizes are also suitable for the garden with appropriate care, but model railway systems with a smaller nominal size are rarely found.

The tracks , rolling stock and garden railroad accessories must be robust and insensitive to the weather. For this reason alone, there is a certain minimum size in terms of scale or track width .

The gauge IIm with a gauge of the model vehicles of 45 mm, which was initiated in 1968 by the Lehmann-Groß-Bahn (LGB), is widespread . This is a meter- gauge model railway in nominal size II .

Garden railroad systems are often privately owned on private property, with several family members often participating in the maintenance of the system and garden. Systems belonging to associations or even private companies are less common.

Due to the large scale and the much smaller risk of fire in the garden, models powered by real steam (called " real steam " after the original of the steam locomotive ) can be found here regularly.

In contrast to model railroad systems , garden railways are located in the open air.

Plant types

Model railway systems in the garden can be divided into two types of system. The transition from one category to the other is primarily dependent on the effort involved in creating it, as well as the integration or separation of a garden landscape.

Fixed system integrated into a garden

These systems are mostly complex model railroad systems integrated in a green garden landscape or in a rock garden. High and low, flowering and non-flowering plantings should be connected together with the tracks, tunnels, bridges, lakes and structures to form a harmonious landscape. The planning of the track system and the garden greening are coordinated. The maintenance of the system and the care of the garden are often complex.

Temporary or mobile system, systems separated (isolated) from the garden

Temporary or mobile garden railways are created on tracks that are laid with simple means, with little or no landscape. Garden railway model railway systems of this type often have only a gravel bed, an asphalt surface or even just a grass surface as the subsurface. Such systems can also be found at exhibitions and trade fairs with materials that are easy to assemble and dismantle. For example on wood chips where the landscape is indicated with potted plants. The maintenance is usually minimal.

Systems of this type are also permanently installed or set up in the same location for a longer period of time. If the corresponding systems are permanently installed, the actual garden usually only begins at the edge of the actual garden railway system. Similar to a model railway system indoors or in a hobby room, the system is limited to a space that has been defined in advance.
