The community Groß Döbern ( Polish Gmina Dobrzeń Wielki ) is a rural community in the Powiat Opolski of the Opole Voivodeship in Poland . Its seat is the village of the same name with around 4500 inhabitants.
The municipality has been officially bilingual (Polish and German) since 2009 and has around 9700 inhabitants (2017).
geography
The municipality borders on the voivodeship capital Opole (Opole) in the south and is located in Upper Silesia . Wroclaw is about 60 km away. The southern border of the municipality is partly formed by the Oder .
history
The municipality came to the Opole Voivodeship in 1950, which changed its layout several times until 1999.
On April 22, 2009, German was introduced as a second language. After German place names became official on December 1, 2009, the municipality had bilingual place name signs put up in July 2010.
As of January 1, 2017, five places were incorporated into the city of Opole. As a result, the community lost the largest business operations. Its population fell from 14,596 to 9,705 at the turn of the year.

Community leader
The head of the municipal administration is the municipality leader. So far this has been Henry Wróbel from the German minority. The regular election in October 2018 led to the following result.
- Piotr Szlapa (Election Committee “The Future of the Community - A Common Cause”) 48.5% of the votes
- Henryk Wróbel ( German Minority Election Committee ) 27.6% of the vote
- Franciszek Sośnik (Election Committee Franciszek Sośnik) 23.9% of the vote
In the runoff election that was necessary, Szlapa was able to prevail clearly against the previous incumbent Wróbel with 68.3% of the votes.
Municipal council
The municipal council consists of 15 members and is directly elected in single-person constituencies. The 2018 municipal council election led to the following result:
- Election committee “The future of the community - a common cause” 45.2% of the votes, 11 seats
- Election committee German minority 17.9% of the votes, 3 seats
- Election Committee Franciszek Sośnik 16.1% of the vote, 1 seat
- Alternative election committee 9.5% of the vote, no seat
- Election committee “Our community” 5.5% of the vote, no seat
- Election committee “Time for changes in our community” 3.7% of the vote, no seat
- Remaining 1.9% of the vote, no seat
Community partnerships
Since the 1990s, Groß Döbern has maintained community partnerships with:
- Heuchelheim , Hessen since 1990
- Wil , Switzerland since 1992.

The rural community (gmina wiejska) Groß Döbern includes four villages with school authorities (sołectwa):
- Chrosczütz (Chróścice)
- Gross Döbern (Dobrzeń Wielki)
- Klein Döbern (Dobrzeń Mały)
- Kupp (Kup)
The towns of Borrek (Borki), Czarnowanz (Czarnowąsy), Finkenstein (Brzezie), Horst (Świerkle) and Krzanowitz (Krzanowice) have been part of Opole since January 2017.
traffic
The voivodship road 454 leads from Namysłów via Groß Döbern to Opole. From her the provincial road branches off 457 after Brzeg (Brieg) leads.
