George is a German television film from 2013 by SWR author and director Joachim A. Lang . The docu-drama thematizes the relationship between the actor Götz George and his father Heinrich George as well as the life and work of his father as an actor during the Nazi regime in Germany until his death in Soviet captivity.
The film explores the question of what responsibility an artist has in a dictatorship . He alternates between feature film and documentary film scenes. In the dramaturgical preparation, Götz George plays the role of Heinrich George as an actor, in the purely documentary film sections he speaks about his father as the de facto son.
George was on 21 June 2013 at the German Film Festival premiere . It was first broadcast on TV on July 22, 2013 on ARTE and on July 24, 2013 on Das Erste .
content
Scenic film elements and flashbacks through historical film material show the most important stages in the life of the actor Heinrich George since the National Socialists came to power up to his last theater performance in the Hohenschönhausen prison camp . The film is based on scenes from an interrogation that Heinrich George has to face. The Russian People's Commissariat for Internal Affairs ( NKVD ) tries to understand George's involvement in the Nazi regime. George's roles in the propaganda films Jud Süss or Kolberg and his commitment to Jewish colleagues and members of the opposition while he was in charge of the Schiller Theater are discussed. In real scenes, Götz explains to George what it was like for him to play his own father.
background
The television film George is a teamWorx production in co-production with SWR (leading), WDR , RBB and NDR in cooperation with ARTE , funded by Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg (MBB), Medien- und Filmgesellschaft Baden-Württemberg (MFG) and Film - and Media Foundation NRW .
When the National Socialists took power in Germany in 1933 and established a dictatorship, Heinrich George was one of the most famous actors of the Weimar Republic, which had lasted around 14 years . Only a few days after the end of the Second World War in Europe, the suppression of the Nazi regime, he was arrested on the orders of the Soviet occupying power . He died in Soviet captivity in 1946. From then on, his wife Berta Drews raised their sons Jan and Götz alone. Götz George, along with his brother Jan, was one of the most important contemporary witnesses when it comes to Heinrich George's last years. He was eight years old when his father died. The Soviet interrogation protocols have been available since the mid-1990s.
