Gheorghe "Gică" "Baciul" Popescu (born October 9, 1967 in Calafat ) is a former Romanian football player and current businessman .
Career as a player
The defender began his career in his hometown with Dunărea Calafat . From there it took Nicolae Zamfir , the youth coach of Universitatea Craiova , in the district capital of Dolj debuted and Popescu on June 9 in 1985 with home win against Universitatea the FCM Brasov in the Divizia A . In late 1987 he was asked to do his military service in Bucharest and therefore played in the second half of the 1987/88 season for Steaua Bucharest . In the summer of 1988 he returned to Universitatea Craiova against the will of the club's management, which also included Ilie Ceaușescu , the brother of Nicolae Ceaușescu , and was temporarily exposed to accusations of desertion . In 1990 Popescu moved to PSV Eindhoven , where he stayed until 1994. He then joined Tottenham Hotspur in 1994 and only stayed there one season before moving to FC Barcelona in Spain in 1995. In 1997 he moved to Galatasaray Istanbul in Turkey . He won the UEFA Cup with Galatasaray in 2000 . In 2001, despite the success, he moved to US Lecce in Italy , where he played one season. In 2002 he came to the Romanian record champions Dinamo Bucharest , but moved to Hannover 96 in Germany during the current season . There he completed a total of 14 games in the 2002/03 season, where he scored one goal. He played his last game as an active player on May 17, 2003, when he played on the 33rd Bundesliga matchday in a 2-2 draw against Borussia Mönchengladbach . On May 20, 2003, four days before the last game day of the Bundesliga , he announced that he would end his career at the end of the season.
National team
For the Romanian national soccer team Popescu played a total of 115 games from 1988 to 2003 and scored 16 goals. He made his debut for his country in a 3-0 home win against Albania on September 20, 1988. Popescu took part with the team at the 1990 World Cup in Italy , the 1994 World Cup in the USA , the 1998 World Cup in France , the 1996 European Championship in Great Britain and the 2000 European Championship in Belgium and the Netherlands . He played his last international game on March 29, 2003, in the 2-5 defeat by Denmark . Just two days later, he announced the end of his career in the national team.
After the career
Popescu founded his own football school for young talents during his active career in Craiova under the name Școala de fotbal Gică Popescu . Because of the non-transfer of transfer proceeds for the player Bogdan Gavrilă to Dunărea Galați , all teams of the school were excluded from the championship in March 2010. In March 2013, Popescu announced that it would close the highly indebted football school for cost reasons.
In November 2005 he ran for president of the Romanian Football Association , but was narrowly defeated by the incumbent Mircea Sandu . In addition to his role as a TV football expert, Popescu also appears as a businessman and investor. He owns a holding company , which includes ten companies, through which projects for the construction of hotel, office, commercial and residential properties are carried out.
Popescu was sentenced to three years and one month imprisonment on March 4, 2014 for engaging in a player transfer corruption scandal. Between 1999 and 2005, the Romanian state was deprived of around 1.5 million euros.

Awards
Popescu managed to be Romania's Footballer of the Year six times (1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1995, 1996) despite the competition from his brother-in-law Gheorghe Hagi , who won this award seven times. On March 25, 2008, Popescu was awarded the Order of Merit "Meritul sportiv" III by the Romanian President Traian Băsescu for his services in the national team. Class excellent. He is an Honored Master of Sports.
