Grand Prix de Rouen-les-Essarts
The Grand Prix de Rouen-les-Essarts (German: Großer Preis von Rouen-les-Essarts ) was an automobile race that was held a total of 18 times in the area around the north-west French city of Rouen from 1951 to 1978 . In most years the race was advertised for Formula 2 , and twice for Formula 1 , although the Formula 1 races did not have world championship status.
history
The Grand Prix de Rouen-les-Essarts was organized by the Auto Club de Normandie (ACN). The venue was the Rouen-les-Essarts race track .
At times, the Grand Prix de Rouen-les-Essarts was in competition with the French Grand Prix , a Formula 1 race with world championship status, which was held alternately in Rouen and on the Circuit de Reims-Gueux in Champagne . In the years when the world championship run was already taking place in Rouen ( 1952 , 1957 , 1962 , 1964 and 1968 ), there was usually no other Grand Prix of Rouen-les-Essarts.
The Grand Prix de Rouen-les-Essarts was a Formula 2 race until 1959 and again from 1965. From 1967, with the exception of 1974, it was a regular part of the Formula 2 European Championship , and in the 1960s the races were part of the Trophées de France , the French Formula 2 championship, on several occasions . In 1953 and 1954 the race in Rouen was advertised for Formula 1, but it had no world championship status. In 1961 and 1963, when there was no independent Formula 2, Formula Junior races were held in Rouen .
Racetrack
The venue was the Circuit Rouen-les-Essarts, a temporary race track that mostly included public roads. It was mainly in the area of the municipality of Grand-Couronne , about 11 km south of Rouen. Your district of Les Essarts gave the course its name. Rouen itself, one of the largest cities in Normandy and the administrative seat of the Haute Normandie region , did not touch the route.
The course has been rebuilt several times over the years, not least for safety reasons. This changed the route and the length in some cases considerably. From 1951 to 1954 the course was 5.1 km long, then 6.542 km until 1970 and finally 5.543 km in recent years.
The Formula 2 races of the 1960s and 1970s were often held one after the other in several runs.
