The Schlager Grand Prix was launched in 1998 as a counterpart to the Folk Music Grand Prix . It was supposed to take up the German Song Festival in 1991 and 1992, but could not prevail, even though Switzerland also wanted to take part in 1999. However, the competition was discontinued after the first event.
For the 1998 Schlager Grand Prix, a preliminary decision was held in Germany (March 5) and Austria, with 7 titles each being determined for the final. The international event, a co-production of ZDF and ORF , took place on April 25th in Munich and was broadcast live from Hall 9 of the Bavaria film studios. The moderators were Kim Fisher and Patrick Lindner . After the titles were presented, juries from the ARD radio stations as well as ORF and SRG submitted their points. At the end of the ranking, Oliver Haidt was the first and only winner of the Schlager Grand Prix. His song I think of Rhodes was composed by Frank Pavell and written by Marina Lange .
