Gray-Dort Motors Ltd. was a Canadian manufacturer of automobiles .
Company history
The Chatham company was owned by William Gray Sons-Campbell , known as William Gray & Sons Co. Ltd. from 1856 worked in coach and sledge construction. In 1915 the production of automobiles began with a license from the Dort Motor Car Company . The brand name was Gray-Dort . The production stop at Dort in 1924 led to major problems. Negotiations with Hudson Motor Car Co. , Nash Motors and Gray Motor did not result in a conclusion. Production ended in 1924, and existing vehicles were sold until 1925.
A source states that Gray-There was at times the top-selling automobile manufacturer in Canada. According to another source, the sales figures were higher for a while as the competitor Chevrolet from General Motors Canada , although their vehicles were much cheaper. A total of around 25,000 or around 26,000 vehicles were built.
vehicles
The 1915 models were US models with different trademarks and hubcaps .
The models from 1916 were based on the models from Dort, but were in some cases better equipped. Some sports versions had no US counterparts . The 1918 Special was even exported to the USA . The 1922 Special is said to have been the first Canadian car with an automatic reversing light. Some coupes named Harvard and Yale were also on offer.
A four-cylinder engine from Lycoming powered most vehicles. Until 1918 it had a displacement of 2727 cm³ , then a displacement of 3146 cm³. From 1924 a six-cylinder engine from the Falls Motor Corporation with a displacement of 3205 cc was also added.
