Russell Motor Car Company Ltd. , previously Canada Cycle & Motor Co. , was a Canadian manufacturer of vehicles .

Company history

The company Canada Cycle & Motor Co. in 1899 in Toronto to bicycle production established. Tricycles and Quadricycles with built-in motors from De Dion-Bouton were added later , although the brand name has not been passed down. In 1903, the production of electric cars began with the takeover of the Canadian Motors plant . The brand name was Ivanhoe . This production ended in 1905. For this, vehicles with gasoline engines were now in the range, which were marketed as Russell after the general manager TA Russell . In 1909, the exclusive manufacturing rights for Canada for the valve engine were acquired from Charles Yale Knight and the engines were initially obtained from the Daimler Motor Company . In 1910 there was an interruption in production. From 1912 production continued under the name Russell Motor Car Company . The brand name was Russell-Knight from 1912 for 1913 models with slide motors .

Car production ended in 1915. It is not known when the company was dissolved.

Brand name Ivanhoe

The only model was a runabout . The electric motor came from Westinghouse. A chain transmitted the engine power to the rear axle. The batteries were divided into two groups for better weight distribution and placed both in the front and in the back of the vehicle. Solid rubber tires and pneumatic tires were available. The maximum speed was specified with 22 km / h, and the range with 64 km.

Brand name Russell

The first model had a two-cylinder engine with 14  hp . It had cardan drive and steering wheel shift . Around 25 of these vehicles were built by 1906. Model B with a 16 HP engine and Model C with a four-cylinder engine with 24 HP output followed in 1906. In 1907 a seven-seater with a four-cylinder engine and 40 HP output was added. A model with a 50 hp engine followed in 1908. Until 1910 there was a model with a 30 hp engine.

The first two models with slide motors had 22 hp and 38 hp respectively in 1910. Fifteen different body structures were available.

In 1915 another model with a valve motor appeared with the 6-30 , which this time was supplied by Continental . Another source names the model Light Six and states that it had a six-cylinder engine with SV valve timing .

Brand name Russell-Knight

In 1912 two new models appeared. The smaller one had a four-cylinder engine with 28 hp. The larger one with a six-cylinder engine with 42 hp had a wheelbase of 3604 mm. Both had electric lights, starters and left-hand drive . The vehicles were launched without adequate testing and caused problems. In 1915, a 32 hp model replaced both models.

In Canada Science and Technology Museum in Ottawa is a model issued 28 (1914 Year) from the family of its founder.
