Greeter

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Greeters are volunteers and not professional city or tourist guides who offer free walks in cities and regions. The focus of the project is the encounter with travelers and the individual presentation of one's own city or region. The global umbrella organization is the International Greeter Association (AISBL) based in Brussels.

history

In 1992, Lynn Brooks founded the “Big Apple Greeter” association in New York City . The focus was on improving the bad image of the metropolis through voluntary and personal support for tourists. Other "greeter" projects followed in other US cities and around the world. In the meantime more than 300 volunteers "greet" more than 7000 visitors per year in New York City (as of 2010). The first German greeters from December 2008 were the "Berlin Greeters" in Berlin.

"Greeter" programs

The definition, organization and legal form of the individual "Greeter" programs vary widely around the world. The projects are mainly offered in metropolitan areas and in cities, but sometimes also in larger regions (Rhine-Ahr, Kent, Pas de Calais) or even nationwide (Ivory Coast). While many “greeter” programs are organized in independent associations, others cooperate closely with the local tourist offices. In the following table the programs are arranged alphabetically by state, within the states alphabetically by city.

International Greeter Association (formerly Global Greeter Network)

All official greeter organizations are organized in the "International Greeter Association (IGA)". The prerequisite for admission to the IGA is, among other things, the recognition of six principles ("Core Values"):

  • Greeters work on a voluntary basis, they give all your visitors a friendly welcome
  • Greeters welcome individual guests or very small groups of up to 6 people. The focus is on the dialogue between greeter and guest.
  • The walk with a greeter is free.
  • All guests and volunteers are welcome without discrimination.
  • The greeters support sustainable tourism. They respect the natural and social environment and promote the cultural development of local communities. Greeters promote the image of their home town / region.
  • The greeter organizations offer greeters and guests the opportunity for mutual cultural exchange. They help build a better world by making person-to-person contact.

The IGA organizes a biennial meeting of the worldwide "Greeter Managers", most recently in March 2019 in Denver / Colorado. There are a few greeter initiatives that have not joined the IGA. Since 2016, a private "Global Greeter Network Foundation" has been operating the GGN website. The then GGN Board of Directors then published a new official website for the Global Greeter Network community in April 2017, which was online until May 4, 2019 under the domain www.globalgreeternetwork.com and was then replaced by the current IGA website.
