Großrosseln (French: Grande-Rosselle ) is a municipality in the Saarbrücken regional association and is located about ten kilometers west of the center of Saarbrücken, the capital of Saarland, on the border with France .
As a specialty, the St. Nikolaus district houses a Christmas post office .
geography
Großrosseln is located in the Warndt an der Rossel , a left tributary of the Saar , directly on the border with France . The French neighboring town on the other side of the Rossel is called Petite-Rosselle ( Kleinrosseln ). On the German side, the municipality borders on the medium- sized town of Völklingen in the west and on the Klarenthal district of the state capital Saarbrücken in the north . Großrosseln is the largest and most populous district within the municipality.
Districts of Großrosseln
The community of Großrosseln is made up of the following districts:
- Village in the Warndt
- Emmersweiler
- Great thrushes
- Karlsbrunn
- Nassweiler
- St. Nicholas
history
In a document from 1290 "Rosseln" is mentioned for the first time in connection with the donation of the patronage right of a chapel over the church of "Rosseln". This justifies the assumption that Großrosseln was a larger settlement as early as 1290. The Saarbrücken counts gained a foothold in the Warndtwald, an old royal estate, and met the lords of Zweibrücken and Lorraine here. There were always disputes over competence and border incidents as a result of unclear ownership. Großrosseln became joint property of the Counts of Saarbrücken , Lorraine, Rixingen and Forbach as well as a Blick von Lichtenberg in 1477. The multiple rule over the village ended in 1670, when the last Creeping share was transferred to the Counts of Saarbrücken by comparison.
In the second half of the Thirty Years' War , from about 1634 to 1648, great thrushes suffered greatly. The village was destroyed in 1637 and the survivors moved away. It was not until 1696 that immigrants from Tyrol came to Großrosseln. In the following years the place grew again quickly. The French Revolution of 1789 also left its mark here; Great Thrushes came under the rule of the 1st French Republic and in 1798 the Mairie Constitution was introduced.
However, the place remained a poor farming village until 1847/48, under the spell of Kleinrossler, the first successful drilling for hard coal was carried out.
Industry brought Großrosseln the end of its economic hardship. In 1900, 78 percent of all families owned a house. In 1907 the place got a direct connection through the newly built railway line to Saarbrücken, whereby the economic boom was maintained. Today Großrosseln has lost its rural character and has become a residential and industrial workers' community. Agriculture is hardly practiced anymore.
After the First World War , the Saar area , which made up about 4/5 of the southern area of today's Saarland, came under French occupation. In the course of the Versailles Peace Treaty of January 10, 1920, the Saar area was created for the first time as a political entity with clearly defined borders and subordinated to the League of Nations in Geneva. After a period of 15 years, the citizens of the Saar area should be able to freely decide on their future affiliation. In the vote on January 13, 1935, 90.8% of the Saar population decided in favor of being reintegrated into Germany, which took place on March 1, 1935.
After the Second World War , the area, now known as Saarland , came under French occupation again , and on November 17, 1947, it became an autonomous region within today's borders. After another referendum on October 23, 1955, this time about the acceptance or rejection of the Saar Statute , i.e. the political status quo or not, surprisingly 67% of the population decided against the adoption of the Saar Statute, this was de facto called Vote for a return to Germany, which was actually not intended as such in the referendum . Germany and France soon entered into negotiations, as a result of which the Saarland entered the scope of the Basic Law in accordance with Article 23 of the Basic Law and on January 1, 1957, became the tenth federal state politically attached to the Federal Republic of Germany. The economic (often affectionately referred to as "the real") reorganization took place on July 6, 1959 ("Day X") .
On April 1, 1964, the municipality of Dorf im Warndt was re-established by hiving off the municipalities of Großrosseln, Karlsbrunn and Ludweiler .
A partnership has existed with the neighboring French municipality of Petite-Rosselle since 1966 .
On the occasion of the regional and administrative reform in Saarland, which came into force on January 1, 1974, the previously independent communities of Dorf im Warndt, Emmersweiler, Karlsbrunn, Naßweiler and Sankt Nikolaus came to Großrosseln.
