Dornstetten is located in the northern Black Forest . The place is at an altitude of 600–715 m above sea level. NN. In the Aach district, the Glatt is created as the confluence of the Ettenbach, Stockerbach and Kübelbach source streams. 1164 ha (48%) of the municipal area are forested.

The city of Dornstetten consists of the former city of Dornstetten and the former communities of Aach and Hallwangen. The village of Aach, the Benzinger Hof homestead and the Glattal houses belong to the former municipality of Aach. The town of Dornstetten and the Lattenberg homestead belong to the former town of Dornstetten (one half and the other part of the Lattenberg with two properties belongs to the municipality of Glatten). The village of Hallwangen belongs to the former municipality of Hallwangen.

In the area of ​​the former town of Dornstetten are the desert areas of Brennenweiler, Bühlerhof and Diffenthal or Niedertall.

Dornstetten around 1900

Until the 19th century

Dornstetten was first mentioned in a document in the year 767 in the Lorsch Codex , at which time the Dornstetter Waldgeding existed in what is now the municipality . Between 1267 and 1276 the place was raised to a city. Dornstetten then belonged to the Counts of Urach-Fürstenberg . The city ​​came to Württemberg in 1320 via the Counts of Hohenberg . A school in the city is mentioned for the first time in 1461. From 1500 the city was in the area of ​​the Swabian Empire . In 1755 Dornstetten became the seat of the Oberamt of the same name , which was dissolved in 1807 in the course of the implementation of the new administrative structure in the Kingdom of Württemberg and incorporated into the Oberamt Freudenstadt . During the district reform during the Nazi era in Württemberg , the city became part of the Freudenstadt district in 1938 . After the Second World War, Dornstetten fell into the French occupation zone and thus came to the newly founded state of Württemberg-Hohenzollern in 1947 , which was merged into the state of Baden-Württemberg in 1952.

Community merger

On January 1, 1975, Dornstetten merged with Aach and Hallwangen to form the new town of Dornstetten.

Religions

Dornstetten has been evangelical since the Reformation . There is a Roman Catholic church in Dornstetten - however, the Roman Catholic population is looked after by the Freudenstadt parish. There is also a New Apostolic and an Evangelical Methodist congregation in the city.

The city can be reached with a few bus routes and belongs to the Freudenstadt district transport community . Dornstetten also has a train station on the Gäubahn . The route between Freudenstadt Hbf and Eutingen im Gäu is operated every hour. The cities of Karlsruhe and Stuttgart can be reached every two hours without changing trains.

The city is located on both Deutsche Fachwerkstrasse and Deutsche Alleenstrasse .

In addition to the grammar school , which was expanded from the Progymnasium in three stages to a full grammar school in the 2006/07 school year , and the Realschule, there is also a Werkrealschule , which is in one building with the Realschule, and three primary schools (one in each district). The Dornstetten branch of the Dreifürstenstein School (physically handicapped school of the KBF Foundation ) and the Eichenäcker School , a special needs school for students with intellectual disabilities, complete the range of schools . Museums

In addition to the doll and toy museum in the “Kaufhaus Hegel”, Dornstetten also houses a local history museum. Over three floors, the exhibition gives insights into the city history of the former Oberamtsstadt and into the life of the citizens in earlier times. The municipal art collection can also be found here, based on a foundation by the Dornstetter artist Eleonore Kötter, who died in 2017.

In the Hallwangen district, the historic silver, copper and heavy spar mine “ Himmlisch Heer ” can be visited.

Another attraction is the barefoot park in the Hallwangen district. On this 2.4 km long circular route with many adventure, Kneipp and play stations, varied nature experiences are offered for young and old, but walking barefoot is also used specifically as a natural remedy for vein problems.
