Track systems

The main station in Passau was built in 1860 by the joint stock company of the Bavarian Eastern Railways . At that time it was still in the area of the municipality of St. Nikola , which came to Passau in 1870 . It has eight platform tracks, including three butt tracks , and three through tracks . The approx. 130 m long building is built in the classical style. On average, around 6,500 passengers use this station every day. An average of 77 trains arrive at the station every day. DB AG employs a total of 90 people at the station.

Today's traffic connections

The station is now a stop for ICE and IC in long-distance and local traffic from DB AG and ÖBB as well as night travel with Nightjet trains from ÖBB.

As of February 2020, ICE trains run every two hours from Vienna Hbf via Linz to Frankfurt am Main , two pairs of trains continue to Dortmund (one pair of trains via Duisburg ) and one from Würzburg without stopping in Hanau and Frankfurt Hamburg-Altona . In addition, outside of the two-hour cycle, an ICE runs from Nuremberg without stopping in Würzburg, Hanau and Frankfurt via Halle to Berlin-Gesundbrunnen

A pair of trains (ICE 91/90) goes via Würzburg Hbf, Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe and Hannover Hbf directly to Hamburg.

IC trains start and end in Passau on the edge of the day. These run via Nuremberg, Frankfurt and Koblenz via Cologne and the Ruhr area to Hamburg-Altona.

The Donau-Isar-Express local transport runs hourly from Passau to Munich , via the Rottalbahn to Mühldorf am Inn and via the Passau Railway to Wels and then to Linz .

A pair of NightJet trains operated by ÖBB stops in Passau for night travel . This runs between Vienna and Hamburg or Düsseldorf. In the opposite direction, a NightJet goes to Vienna Hbf.

The private Ilztalbahn GmbH has been running several pairs of trains on weekends between Passau and Freyung from April to October since July 16, 2011 .

Former connections

From the main station of the city of Passau , the now disused railway line branches off to Hauzenberg with the branch to Obernzell , which used to reach Wegscheid . This route, which has not been used in scheduled passenger traffic for over 25 years, was last used by Passau's railway enthusiasts with special trains and freight trains from various companies until 2002 . After that, the route became impassable due to flood damage. A development association was founded for the route, which wants to reactivate this route.

Since the train station is on the long-distance traffic line Frankfurt am Main - Nuremberg - Linz - Vienna , there have always been a large number of long-distance trains, such as the Oostende-Wien-Express since the beginning of the century or the TEE Prinz Eugen between Hamburg and Vienna since the 1960s , which later lost its name when a nameless IC and then an ICE took over the service.

Until December 2014, the Rottaler Land intercity train pair ran between Hamburg-Altona and Passau on Saturdays . Through coaches of the train continued as regional express on the Rottalbahn to Mühldorf. A change of direction and locomotive took place in Passau's main train station, as the subsequent line is not electrified.

Former track systems

To the west of the main passenger station, there is still a larger freight station on the site of the former marshalling yard, even after it has been partially dismantled, to serve cross-border freight traffic between Germany and Austria as well as to connect goods to ships on the Danube . In the east, the remaining sidings and engine sheds were demolished in the course of the redesign of the " Passauer Neue Mitte ". Until the 1970s, there were siding for the facilities of the port of Passau on the Donaulände in the old town and in the winter port on the Racklau.

Station renovation

A barrier-free expansion of the station had been planned for a long time.

Previous plans

Initial plans were for the station to be rebuilt to be barrier-free from 2008 to mid-2011 for 12.5 million euros . Bavaria should bear 2 million euros of this. The two island platforms as well as the main platform were to be given an elevator and platform 5/6 was to be connected to the so-called Poststeg, which would have significantly shortened the way to the central bus station in the Neue Mitte . In addition, the house platform should be raised to 76 cm and the underpass widened.

However, these plans were changed in the course of 2008 because they would not have done justice to the occasionally very high number of tourist people in the train station, especially those taking part in Danube cruises. This construction project was then postponed to mid-2010 to 2012 and later canceled.

Construction phase

The construction work for the barrier-free renovation was put out to tender across Europe in June 2013. The symbolic groundbreaking ceremony took place in mid-July 2013. A total of 21.5 million euros are to be invested in the station by spring 2017. In mid-September 2013, the second construction phase was awarded for 12.7 million euros.

In the course of the renovation, the western platform track 6a on platform 5/6 is to be completely eliminated, the eastern platform track 5a is to be shortened by 80 m and the platform there will also be eliminated. The main platform is to be raised over a length of 300 m to a platform height of 55 cm, the two central platforms over a length of 400 m to 76 cm.

completion

The completion of the construction work was celebrated with a station party on May 13, 2017.

particularities

Memorial stone to the police officers March and Schachner and remnants of the wall

Since 1951, the station has been used jointly by ÖBB and DB as an inland station. For this reason, there were two passenger underpasses under the tracks, separated by a wall for border and customs controls. Since Austria joined the EU in 1995 and the related elimination of controls, these tunnels have been connected to one another and made accessible from both sides. A remaining part of the wall of a passage bears a memorial plaque for the two police officers Klaus März and Georg Schachner, who were murdered on November 11, 1993 in the Intercity from Linz to Passau near Schärding .

Germany's first “bridge post office” has stood above the tracks since 1975.

Bus transport

Passau's main train station is also served by many bus routes, including city, regional and long-distance buses. The bus stops are only partially barrier-free.

Long-distance buses

Since the market liberalization in the long-distance bus market, Passau's main train station has been increasingly used by long-distance buses from various companies, including Meinfernbus / Flixbus, Berlinlinienbus and eurolines.

Regional buses

Passau Hbf is a central hub for regional buses in the Passau region. Many regional bus routes replace the railway lines from Passau to Freyung (the Passau – Freyung line ) and to Hauzenberg / Wegscheid, which were closed down over time . They are therefore of enormous importance for public transport in the southeastern Bavarian Forest. Occasionally, trips from neighboring Upper Austria also end and begin here.

City bus transport

Due to its more peripheral location to the city center, the main station is not an important city bus hub, but due to the possibility of changing to rail transport and regional and long-distance buses, it is nevertheless of certain importance for the city bus network of VBP . It is approached by the following lines:

There is a connection to the other VBP bus lines at the ZOB, which is about 200 m away from the main train station.

Special lines

During the traffic peaks in school traffic , Passau's main train station is approached by many special lines ( signposted "E" in Passau ). All secondary schools can be reached from there in the morning, and at noon the buses head for the main train station in the opposite direction.
