history

Originally, Hoven did not have its own house of worship. Not until 1832 was a small chapel built on what is now Arnold-Decker-Platz. The place has always belonged to the parish of Mariaweiler . In 1926, Hoven was given a certain degree of independence because it had been promoted to rectorate . On July 6, 1962, Hoven was finally separated from Mariaweiler parish and raised to an independent parish .

Building history

Previous buildings

A first small chapel was built in 1832 on what is now Arnold-Decker-Platz . It was a foundation of the Pohl couple from Hoven. At the beginning of the 20th century, this church no longer met the requirements of the community, so a chapel building association was founded in July 1909 with the aim of building a new chapel . In consultation with the Cologne Vicariate General , the new chapel was to be built on the site of the chapel built in 1832.

The idea for the appearance of the chapel came from the Düsseldorf university lecturer and painter Wilhelm Döringer . He sketched the first drawings and made a rough draft. However, since he was not an architect , an architect was sought who could carry out the plans. The then Cologne diocesan master builder Franz Statz examined Döringer's plans, but refused to supervise the construction. Finally, the Cologne architect Heinrich Forthmann was found , who took over both the drafting of the plans and the construction management. Döringer also monitored the execution. On June 18, 1910, Forthmann was able to submit the completed construction plans to the chapel building association. Construction began on November 19, 1910 and the foundation stone was laid on May 21, 1911. The new chapel was completed in mid-1912. The solemn benediction and reading of the First St. Mass took place on September 29, 1912 by the Mariaweiler pastor Johann Baptist Krumbach, he was commissioned by the archbishopric in Cologne. The new Hovener Chapel was a hall church in the neo-baroque style . It had a ridge turret with a curved hood, which could hold two bells. The church was not built from normal bricks, but from concrete blocks. The masonry work was done by Johann Schumacher from Hoven. The costs amounted to 29,200 marks. The church was badly damaged in the Second World War . The restoration work dragged on until 1948. In 1952 the building was renovated for the last time, with a new, wooden flat ceiling being inserted in the interior. On September 25, 1955, the new organ of the Karl Bach Organ Builders was finally inaugurated. In 1926 the chapel was elevated to the status of the Rector's Church and then in 1962 to a parish church. Since the building was no longer stable, it had to be demolished in 1977.

Today's parish church

Since the previous Herz-Jesu-Kirche from 1910/11 had static problems, the parish decided to build a new church at a different location. The choice for planning the new building fell on the Düren architect Helmut Lüttgen. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on May 29, 1970 and on April 29, 1972 the new parish church was consecrated. Lüttgen planned a central building made of an exposed concrete skeleton, which was filled by reddish brick walls. A lantern with large window openings rises above the altar, which is located on the south-west corner of the church. A weekday chapel and a sacrament chapel are also integrated into the building. In the north-west is the sacristy . In 1978 the Hovener parish church finally got a very low bell tower , which, however, stands free on the church forecourt.

At the end of May 2015 it became known that the Herz-Jesu-Kirche would no longer receive subsidies from the diocese of Aachen in the future . This emerged from the process of Church Real Estate Management (KIM) carried out in the diocese , which is related to savings measures in the Aachen diocese. Overall, the diocese wants to save 33% of the maintenance costs for buildings owned by churches. It has not yet been determined whether the church can continue to be maintained with funds from the parish or whether it should be closed in the future.

Furnishing

The folk altar and the ambo , as well as the altar of the weekday church are works by the artist Bücken. This artist continued to create the candlesticks in the chancel. The organ from 1955 was taken over from the old church and rebuilt in the 1970s. The tabernacle also comes from the old church . In contrast to many other church buildings, the Herz-Jesu-Kirche has no stained glass .

Bells

In the bell tower there are a total of four bells, the fourth of which was taken from the roof turret of the old church.
